Age of a steer

I had a phone call for a steer for next years fair, the fair is this weekend in AZ. What should I  be looking for a early spring (jan.) or a late fall steer. There good friends of mine and they just moved to this county.

Are there age requirements for the show? I know for our fair they have to be born during a certain time span? Know that's not always followed but I'd check that first.
Also do they want to show the calf as soon as they get it? So they're looking for a completely broke & hair ready steer?

well when i went down there last year to help them with there pigs there where steers from a year old to 2 year old showing. As long as the calf is gentel. It's for there 10 year old daughter.

If the fair is this weekend, then for a fat steer you will need a fall born. Typically the fat steers are 16-18 months old when shown. At least here they are in Ohio. Most steers are January thru April very latest May for our state fair is August. For a fat for now, I woul buy a september, october november calf for the following year. THey could show it as a feeder for this year.
