In Ohio the market for competative calves usually is january to April. There is a pocket of county fairs that are later and May's work well for september and October county fairs. This is why we have a hard time selling May, June, July babies. They are too young for Jackpots and our state fair is in July-August like most of our neighboring states.

most of our show calves are born in february, really have to watch them up here that time of year with -20 temps and 3 ft of snow.

so, right now ya'll are getting ready for the state shows then afterwards buy again right? The reason I ask is because I am working on breeding/ selling some cattle, but I live in the south, so I was trying to get my calendar right Thanks for your reply.

Most the county and state shows in the ID, Ut, Wyo, MT area are late July until Labor Day.  About a 6 week window.  I have a May 25th calf on feed and he is going to be hard to get totally finished.  Another 6 weeks of age would really help him out.  Hard to lay down fat when they are still growing.  Not that we are a hot bed of shows here.  Not much money in the sales so the kids can't afford much more than a good feeder calf and make it work.  Not many calves selling over $1000 as club calves.  A few but not many.  LF

Most of the cattle shown up this way are born in November and December.  It is usually January or February before they are found and given a birth date based on the date they were found.  ;D
