My principal hobby - outside of cattle - is growing & collecting fruit & nut trees.
The original 'Hawkeye' Delicious was - and still is - a pretty good apple(I've eaten it) - but the myriad of increasingly red & elongate-conical shaped budsports(mutations) that have been selected through the years based solely on appearance... not so much. Most folks would never look at Hawkeye and recognize it as Red Delicious as it exists in the groceries today.

This is a good book. There is more than one volume. Geneva Experiment Station did a series on many fruits.
