The thing about Northern Improvement is he is out of TC Stockman 365 and he has a 4.5 for birthweight epd. :( , which is pretty big for angus.  The cow he is out of has a smaller b.w. epd but is only a +5 for CED (sometimes I wonder how they come up with some of the #'s they do).
They come up with the #'s they do by taking results of his actual registered progeny, which also explains how they get their accuracy numbers. They do not just take the average of the two parents.
Here's a scenario for you,
Sire has 10 for CED high accuracy
Dam has 2 for CED
Calf with no registered offspring has CED of 2 (now how do they come up with that?)
I've also seen bulls with no offspring have a little lower #'s than both their sire and dam.
I'm sure their is a system but haven't came across how it works yet.  I could dig around on the website or call the association and ask just haven't gotten around to it yet.

I will send you pm trying to explain it, don't want to hijack this person's thread by getting off topic.

Here's the catch they make the EPD charts from the #s that PPL turn in. Some #s GIGO.

For any calving problems with Northern Improvement, I will bet it is coming from the female side which has a huge part of the equation especially if the female is clubby bred. Like I said, I have used him and other breeders around me for clubby bred heifers without problems. Below is his EPD'S and he only has a -0.7 BW which is below average on birth weight with a +10 CE which I would guess is easily in the top 10% of the breed and not many have a better accuracy in his EPD's than Northern Improvement which comes with being an older bull. EPD's are based on the breed, so Northern Improvement to other Angus cows comes up with the EPDs as Northern Improvement is a PB Angus.
