I had a cow go down last night.  She looked worse this morning so I called the vet and we just did a C-Section. This cow was due Mar 31st.  I got a Rajin Cajun bull calf out of her but lost the cow.  He looks like he is doing good.  He is in the hot box warming up then in about an hour we will get some of colostrum down him, then probably another dose tonight and one more in the morning to get him going then I have a nurse cow to put him on.  Any other tips to make sure this guy gets the best chance possible.

Bottle feed him every 4 hours (from when you get up to when you go to bed, don't do it at night) for like a month and give him a raw egg in his bottle. That seems to help anyways. Electrolytes help also if he starts to get sick but I don't think you should start cramming things down him, he might get sick on you.

Well got him to start to nurse on the milk cow.  So I know he will suck.  He just doesn't quite have his legs under him yet but is doing good.  Tubed him with first dose of colostrum around 2:30pm so will go out before bed and see if he will eat a bottle with some more colostrum.  Then another dose in the morning then I think he will be ready to become a permanent fixture on the nurse cow.  Actually a good thing this calf was 2 weeks early because I think he must weigh 100 lbs.  We will try to get a weight on him in the morning.

I thought I did now today the calf doesn't want to nurse the milk cow.  Guess we'll work on it again tomorrow when he's hungrier.
