Technically you can wean him as soon as he will eat but I would recommend getting him on creep feed asap, if you can cut his mama out to give her a little extra every day that would help too.  We wean at 5 months on show babies most of the time.  If you can creep feed him and/or give his mama a little extra I would day wean him in say mid July, day weaning is cutting them out in the daytime and feeding them then letting them back out with mama at night.  Then wean him completely around early August so he will have time to suffer a bit at weaning then recover and go back to growing

We only day wean calves that we show with their mamas as pairs but it will help keep him growing and give you a little head start on getting him broke.  If the mama will allow it the faster you can get a halter on him the better
