Are People Nuts??? Part 2

High selling heifer at the Trowbridge sale, $37,500 for half interest.  Before it starts, I know there are some "you buy mine, I'll buy yours", but I think most of these high prices are real.  Just like spending $50k on a steer for a chance to win $50k.  I wish we had a ranch raised class at our fair.  I'm tired of daddy trying to buy his princess a ribbon.

I guess that's still better than buying a 50k steer to win 10k! (clapping)

Selling high dollar cattle is how some people make a living. Thats where they make their money, this is all they do is raise cattle. So in short if they cant be the best at what they do (meaning making the big bucks come sale time), they dont prosper. If this is all these people do in their lives they are going to be good at it and their cattle will bring that price at the sales, because someone thinks its worth that price and down the road maybe that person ends up making money on their purchase. Its all a gamble wether you buy a 1000 heifer or a 10,000 dollar heifer.

People are jealous way more then they are nuts.

Took a 4-weight red-neck roan steer to the sale barn couple weeks ago with a batch of solid red 5-weights. He was in that awkward age-weight that doesn't fit with any market show, or anything for that matter. Of course they sorted him off by himself then started the bidding at .40 cents. I may have made a spectacle of myself by stopping the sale and telling the auctioneer I'd take him home. Sadest part is, I had a couple guys call later to see if I'd sell him to them. One guy even asked if I had a bull calf like him at home he could buy to use at that price.

Days like that I wonder why even mess with roans

Elbee, same thing happened to me.ran a roan thru,guy next to me said wow thats a fat longhorn calf.I set him straight,still didnt help.i dont take anything but black cattle to sale barn anymore and i dont take less than 5 at a time.they kill you with singles.rusty

There ya go... you are so right.  At least part of the time.  We are one of those ranchers.  We work hard at it and aren't made of money hiring all the work done.  (there's lots of those too that start that way)  and that's ok too I suppose. 
If any of you want to buy part half interest in this girl let us know!  Could sure use some of that big money!!  Let me know what you think.

What you have to remember is there are other people griping about you that they have to spend a bunch of money to show because they weren't blessed with land where they could raise their own.  We're on the receiving end of that complaint in our county.

Is it more noble to show steers just so you can make a profit?  That ain't the point of the program either.  Frankly, I appreciate that families that spend a bunch of money on show steers aren't in it for the money.  I have no problem with how anyone does it as long as the kids are right there in the middle of it all working.

Do what you want to do, what's right for your family, and don't worry about everyone else. 

When you have nice cattle you should get that much!

you know what, if a person figures out how to make 50k to blow on a steer more power to them, atleast we know they arnt on welfare!

If they can afford to spend big bucks on their calves, then God bless em.  What they spend on their cattle is none of anyone's business.  Something I've noticed about livestock in general (steers, hogs, sheep, goats) is that nobody ever snivels about the folks who stand last.  If you're not upsetting somebody, then you're probably not doing much winning.  If they're consistently whipping your tail & it bothers you that much, then raise better cattle. <rock>

There are plenty of people who spend big money on show cattle.  So what?  Is there something wrong with that?  There's a couple of families in our county that spend more than we possibly could on their show calves.  Power to em.  I happen to know that their kids are working their tails off on those calves, and I hope they do well.  Their kids deserve it.

AMEN!!! Come to our county fair and give that speech, would ya??

Jlingle I fully agree with you as the mother of Babytex.  We have bought a few show calves in the past and are starting to get some awesome calves ourselves that we have done AI.  We use to milk cows and had a tornado take our barn out so we no longer milk but the kids still wanted to show so we said we would start with some of the beef we had on our feedlot and our children still worked hard.  We had a gentleman from a neighbring county just call us out of the blue to buy a couple clubies because he said he knew our families work ethic and we said we would try it unfortunately we had a couple "devon" people that said we had a lot of gaul to buy our cattle.  We explained to them that these cattle were bought as babies and they would not be where they were at on show day without the hard work the kids put in everyday, which was numerous hours.  You could take the best animal in the world without the proper feeding program and daily work with hair and showmanship and you could finish in last place.  My kids have also learned the meaning of hard work usually by the time show season is over for a few month after our MN Beef Expo the kids are really wore out but I am proud of them.
