how would REALLY know how efficient two cows were that had a difference of 2" if no one measures feed intake per pound of weaned calf?

Bingo.    Feed efficiency and cow maintenance are two different things

one thing i am always scared of is the cow that sticks around that puts on weight eating air, looks great, has great breeding etc, but can't produce a calf no matter how good her bag looks and how many sires one tries.  to me, i want butter fat, not a big udder, but,,,, no one measures that in beef cattle any more, not that that many did in the first place, though some did in europe more often.

I just noticed today that Greg is no longer listed on the ASA staff page so he must be officially gone.  I am a little surprised that there is no announcement of it on the web page but I guess if things happened as people are saying they did I shouldn't be shocked.

hmmm, different or same genes or overlapping sets?  is there a photoperiod (time of year, not day) and latitude effect worth noting?

How in the heck do you go from talking about the ASA Executive to feed effiency and gene over lapping versus environment.

As far as tenderness and flavor in our product! ----  Get out of the way and let it happen, whether genetically or in the processing. Corn fed may be a thing of the past, without added value in the retail product!

I believe tenderness and flavor will be to the beef industry what Round-up was to soybeans!

And don't forget efficiency too!

What about Rusty Knight as ASA secretary?

I just got a letter from ASA and it was signed by Greg......gee, ya think it was a "form letter"????  :-\

I spoke with a cattleman/feeder that keeps very good records....him and his "nutritionalist" blame grain by products (gluten, DG's , etc)....he explained it with all the technical terms, but in summary "grain-by-products" lower the grade.
And from what I understand that is what the CAB program is blaming for the lower number of CAB carcasses....and therefore, lowering their standards.

that's what i'd say too if i had a marketing program that relied on hide color.  it would seem that feed would be an easier thing to change than genetics.  what a load of frass.

1. I do not know of anyone involved in the shorthorn breed qualified for the job!

Qualifications

Financially successful in the cattle industry!  not the education system!

Has an idea of how to bring the shorthorn breed from number 10 in breed numbers to at least 5 and 3 would be good!

Has concrete cohones the size of basketballs and a titanium spine so he can take control of the entire breed and mold it his way!

2. The breed ( cattle type)  must change!  The show ring cattle must get smaller and more realistic.  Anyone who would argue that point is just a fool!

3. Commercial genetics and show genetics must be the same  the new sec must put that as a primary goal!

Just a thought , but I have gotten to know Twig Marston extremely well, and he is much more than just an educator. In recent years he has produced breed leaders such as TM Dazzler 54P and TM Gus (who is up and coming with lots of potental) He has the mind set and the know how to make these cattle functional and desirable to the entire industry. The Cattle he has done well with are of functional type. 54P has a 3+ BW. but I haven't heard of any calving problems and know for a fact his full Sib has had calves in the 80's the past 2 years. I realize their is a stigma about educators in working in the real world, but Twig doesn't fit that bill. As for concrete cohones I wouldn't know, but we live in America we aren't allowed to force people to breed cattle any certain way. They have to want to, but if a wrench could be thrown in the mix to change the trends Twig would know how to do it.

I wish he would take the job it could be a great change for Shorthorns.
