Attorney General Drew Edmondson Willing to Go After the Cattle Industry Over Manure in Watersheds...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As the hearing continues over whether the state of Oklahoma has the right to end all application of manure in the Illinois River watershed, Oklahoma Attorney General Drew Edmondson appears to have no qualms about litigating against cattle producers as well as poultry companies. In response to some of the arguments raised by attorneys representing the Poultry industry in the continuing legal confrontation- arguments that point the finger of bacterial blame towards the cattle industry- Edmondson told the Northwest Arkansas Gazette for their Internet edition that "We are willing to go where the evidence takes us," this in reference to a question of whether he would be willing to expand his battle against the poultry industry to other livestock species- most notably cattle.
The Claims of the Oklahoma Attorney General are that the biggest offender of bacterial pollution into the Illinois River is the poultry industry. Meanwhile, it's the contention of the Poultry Industry that there has been no science based study pinpointing that poultry is the big offender- and that there are multiple sources of any pollution that ends up in the Illinois River. On Monday, an expert witness for the Poultry industry told the court that manure from an estimated 200,000 cattle raised in the watershed proved a better environment for bacteria to grow in, instead of the poultry litter that is spread on farm fields as a dust-like material and exposed to sunlight that kills contaminants.
The arguments over all things fecal bacteria in the watershed continues, with most of animal agriculture very concerned that the AG, if he has the ruling come his way in Tulsa, puts animal agriculture in deep manure over this battle of how much and where chicken litter can be applied to the land as a nutrient. Mr. Edmondson says the tolerance level is zero- at least in a stream where canoes are floating. He has told the court that he wants an injunction before the "spring rains" or otherwise the bacteria will wash into the Illinois River and potentially cause harm to thousands of people floating down the Illinois.
I guess that is one reason we fenced off the farm's cattle from getting into a creek that runs into the Scioto. That & simple wear & tear on the banks to prevent erosion.
What about all the pharmaceutical drugs found in drinking water? Everything from growth hormones, birth control & pain meds. Too me that is more serious!
we need to sue god for putting humans on the planet.  we need to sue everything for pooping.  i wonder if that same AG would sue the government for allowing 2 m illion legal immigrants each year as well as all the illegals, and all the parents who have more than the replacement number of kids which is 2.1.  they won't stop till the public gets upset though and they get paid.  what about all the fish in the ocean urinating.  at least if we go fishing, there is less of them  to go pee.
this is pretty funny
The teachers argue that compulsory homework should be scrapped for primary school children and cut back for teenagers because the pressure it causes is a key factor in childhood unhappiness.
remember, your kids are your friends, you are not their parents.  that's the state's job.  vote for it soon.
What do they tell you to do with old drug?  Flush them down the toilet.  Now they can't figure out why EVERYTHING under the sun is being found in drinking water.
If livestock urinate near a stream, that's pollution. If a canoeist or fisherman urinates near a stream, that's ecology.
We should sue God for allowing attorneys to exist! ;D
I for one won't be going to Oklahoma to canoe this year. Not because of pollution but because of the AG. Though I will stop and eat a nice juicy triple cheese burger. Maybe add bacon to support the swine industry. 8)
corrolation is not causation.  if pollution is a problem, limit people.
the government forced mtbe on us and fought tooth and nail to keep it.  they won't pay for groundwater cleanup.
Knabe - This is why most people die waiting for the government to protect them.
Remember air bags, they were to save us all from auto accidents. But only if you weren't shorter than 5' and taller than 6'3". Wonder how many broken noses were caused by to powerful air bags?
What gets me about this story is prevailing wisdom is we (Americans) need to eat more chicken to be healthier. But the poop will get into the water we drink. So sue the poultry industry which in turn raises the price of chicken so its too expensive so we don't eat it. Well at least the rich people will be able to eat right.  ;)
Y'all, I can remember going on student trips in College ( Block&Bridle, Judging Team, Fraternity) and, once in awhile (quite often, actually)the Professors and other students during "cocktail time" the night before the competitions, would get down-right nasty with us folks who were from Broiler/Turkey/ Country.It didn't help that I threw up the fact that those of us in the lower midwest and southeast had more Brood Cows per square mile than the "real ranchers". Waht I'm saying is this: Many, many people in the Beef &Cattle Industries have long-time disdain for the Poultry Industry. Many folks who have always said, "Who cares. It's just the Chicken &Turkey Industry's problem", had better realize this is the start of ANIMAL AGRICULTURE's problems.
divide and conqueur.  simple yet tried and true.
no one is dividing and conqueuring congress.  the founding fathers tried, and congress has been unifiying ever since.
