Can people give me the benefits of giving a steer a B-12 shot?  Our fair is about 50 days out.  It's hot and steers are slowing down on feed. A friend said he has had good luck with appetite picking up and overall pros by giving a B-12 shot.  Just wanted to see if it was worth a try, even if it does not help with appetite, but for overall health before we show.

B-12 should increase his appetite and is just one of the benefits of the vitamin. At the risk of giving away a secret, we use Rooster Booster in a drench instead of giving a shot.

Thanks for info!  Do you recommend when to give a dose?  Our weigh in for fair is Aug 29th so I have about 50 days or so.  How often can you give it to them?

You can start now since they have slowed down and give 2-3 times a week from this point forward.  Put about 1/3 of bottle in a gallon of drinking water and drench.  That is what we have done...G-Luck

If you see results that's good, but rumen bugs should produce more than enough of all of the B vitamins if the rumen is functioning at all.  If you still need him to gain fast to meet your weight goal then you could increase the nutrient density of his feed to keep him growing.  Also, we have always had good results with probiotics to keep them eating and gaining well.

Also, grinding your feed more finely could help as it would increase the rate of passage through the rumen and keep him more hungry feeling.

Just some tips that you could also combine with the B12 if you still don't see the results you want
