I recently got several straws of semen from a local farmer who was getting rid of his tank.  Haven't used the first straw but this weekend I happened to pull out one cane and noticed that every straw in that cane had somewhat of a black tent to it at the very end.  Didn't take any of the straws out of the cane, just put them right back down.

My thought is that these straws have been thawed and refroze, or they the tank ran dry and then was recharged only to cause frost bite in the ends of these straws.  Is that what this is?

Do you think this cane has any quality in it whatsoever?

probably toast.  lost some that way from someone except that when i purchased it, the center i purchased it from tested the semen and said it was good, but never got a report, so i don't think the tested it.  needless to say, they are not in business anymore.  on the other hand, i did sell some semen from them from the 60's and it was good, so the person i bought it from probably did the damage.  still it was annoying they "tested" it and said it was good.  don't throw it away, try a few on an early one or just have it tested.

Take a straw and look at it under the microscope using  low power - better yet if you don't have a microscope or don't exactly know what you are looking for take it to your vet (frozen) and have him/her thaw it and look at it - if the sperm are dead they won't move and it is toast

Good news, the semen I really wanted from the tank was ok!  Some of the semen was no good but we gave the straws to our local high school to he AI process.

Good question.  What power of magnification is used to view semen?  Is it 100X or 430X or higher?
