Building a new barn. 70x50. It will have a wash rack and clipping room with concrete. Also it will have a large fan pen with cedar fiber. The middle will be pretty wide open and used to different things through out the year, as we transition from getting babies ready to sell, to heifers, then to fats.
Any ideas on what to use on the middle part of the barn. It'll be roughly a 40x30 area.

Thanks in advance.

I am in the same exact boat. Built a 60 x 100 last year. Pens on one side, office, wash rack, and tack/feed room on other. So basically a 30 x 100 lane down middle of barn.
I temporarily have outdoor carpet from pens to wash rack, but am seriously thinking of going with crushed granite.

Worked in a barn in the hill country of Texas, we had granite gravel to burn,  held up well, if it did get wet mud wasn't a problem.  Also had access to shredded tree limbs, leaves, bark at another place after you got it wet and packed it wasn't bad.

Those would both be great ideas... Problem is I'm in West Texas and granite isn't common. So I think that would get pricey.

I'm considering a clay based road mix without the rock. I've been told if you keep it wet down it doesn't blow. And it isn't supposed to harden up.

There is a pumpkin patch about 2 miles outside of a small town in Nebraska that gets a ton of traffic.  It is on a gravel road and produced a dangerous amount of dust.  Last year the county covered it with a "no dust" gravel and it really worked.  I don't know what they call it but it is red in color and every time I took my kids out there I wondered if it would work in a barn or cooler.

Maybe call your county commissioner and ask them if they have any of that stuff.  You may be able to buy it from them.

You ain't far from me.  A thought,  football field in zephyr, and grape creek will be replaced soon.  Artificial surface that ain't worth much.  I would watch for the tree trimmers and gather their grindings.
