I do wish there was a better picture of Dividend. I will never forget the first time I saw Dividend. I had travelled with 5 friends to Kansas to go to the Polled Congress in Hutchison , KS and we also wanted to see the "new " Irish imports that were at Beef Genetics Research. Inc, at Mankato, KS. When we got to BGR, we found out that both Dividend and Improver, were at Kabsu, getting collected. After visiting BGR for a day, we then headed to Kabsu to see the two bulls. I think that all 6 of us were in complete awe when we saw Dividend. He was massive, and was thick topped and big butted. He was one of the longest bulls we had ever seen. All 6 of us said he was the best Shorthorn bull, and some of us said he was the best bull of all breeds that we had ever seen, to that point in time.
When I got home, I phoned Di-k Judy, and asked him if he would sell Dividend. He said that both bulls were not for sale. I had thought that he might have wanted to sell him, because the ASA had rejected the Irish cattle for registration. Several days later, I received a letter from Di-k, saying that he had reconsidered and that he would sell both Dividend and Improver, along with the semen inventories in both bulls for $40,000. Looking back, that would have been a rather good investment. We decided not to purchase them only because we had a shipment of Irish cattle coming from Ireland, by this time.
Unfortunatley we did not have a camera with us when we saw Dividend. He looked nothing like the picture that is used most often of him ( other than his color and his horns). I still think of that moment, when we first saw Dividend, as one of the monumental moments I have had since I started raising these critters.

That ole bull [Dividend] doesn't need to have a good picture to prove his worth to the Shorthorn breed.Especially in America,he might be the most influential Shorty of all time.

I saw dividend for the first time at Chicago and like Justintime was impressed with how radicaly different he and Improver were than the other cattle of any breed at that years International. Also of interest was how different Improver and Dividend were from each other being out of the same small herd.

As a 10 year old kid that Dividend picture is burned in my mind. He was the king. My first female that got me in the horns was a direct daughter. Robert and Ron are two breeders I will forever respect and admire. I just sold my only direct daughter of Gizmo. That bull made me want to buy cattle at Ward Bakenhus's sale. Our bull Wild Side has Dividend in his pedigree so many times I lost count. Our newest bull coming has Gizmo in his pedigree and I am pretty fired up at what he can do for us in the steer deal. Two great ones but Dividend is the king.

i would have to go with Gizmo  his influence on the cattle of today and 10 yrs from now is much more important than what Leader 13 did back 25 yrs ago.....

if we are going to project, perhaps we could project what dividend also would have done if he was registered when he was brought over.  that would have changed who might have developed him, although to be honest, he was one of several different breeds brought over by who might have developed him and it is doubtful things would have changed that much as other things were already in the mix.

MAYBE???  no maybe to it...... sooner or later shorthorns will have to change and the type of cattle and the breeding programs that GIZMO represents is the direction the breed must go in order to survive!
JMO

later!

i'm comparing era to era, not the type dividend is versus gizmo, i am just saying dividend would have been used more in his day, and remember who he was competing against for type.  they were both what was needed when they were/are around.  remember ayatollah?  to me, that's who i compare dividend against and compare gizmo with, i'm not familiar enough with shorthorns today that work like i agree with you today they should.
