Been Hiding this one...
« on: August 25, 2016, 02:32:36 PM »
Here's a heifer I've been keeping in my back pocket all summer.  What do you think?  Good enough for the show road?

I truly hope I am wrong.  I had a similar heifer this year
that I really like, but was not as good as I thought.

I think you may be disappointed in her showing results.
Though I don't know age or breeding-

I appreciate her look from the side.  She profiles nicely.
I like her bone and leg.  I like her length and depth of rib.
I appreciate her condition.

I don't care for the way her shoulder transitions into her neck. That transition
seems low.  Her neck is not especially clean either.
I see her as a bit pinched in her heart and front rib.
Though I see it as a sign of growth, I see her high tail set
and protruding bone as a distraction in the level top line most judges prefer.
I don't think she will have the overall mass of other heifers
she will show against.

Some of these observations can be minimized by grooming and
show techniques.  She doesn't have the hair to hide things.

Is she better than most heifers out there?  You bet!

Good luck to you!

As far as the tail head issues, I think that is another calf in the background. Her actual hip and tail head look pretty good to me.

She's a late January embryo calf by SAV Resource and my National Champ cow Blackwood Lady 2T. The funny angle on the tail head is definitely a calf in the background.  She's super soggy and sweet made with thickness to boot. She'll be as massive or larger than most calves her age (she's around 700lbs currently) .   Her front end isn't what would pass for show phenotype in the US but she's plenty clean enough fronted to do well up here IMO. Attached pic shows her structure a bit better, although she's pretty "sucked out" in this one since she was just being tied for the first time and weaned at the same time.  He front end looks way better since i got her clipped out this weekend...I'll try to grab a pic tonight.

Newer pic of her. Once she starts to belly down and put on some hair she's going to really be a tank.

Little update on this one.  She may not have looked like a show heifer to some folks on here but I stand by my assertion that she would be a good cow.  Her first calf standing beside her in the pic below.

Thanks!  Bull calf is making friends fast haha.  Lucky me, I have a full sibling brother to that cow.  Walked him some this spring and collected some semen on him.  Pretty excited about the maternal power in that blood.

Got a better pic of the pair on my cell at lunch time.  The calf is by Bruns Blaster.  He's not huge frame by any means but man is he solid built.  88lb bw and I'll weigh him this weekend.  Thinking around 900lbs. Was born Jan 20th.
