I am in the process of purchasing two Maine/Angus heifers for my children.  One of the heifers was born on 12/16/08 - I think she should stay on the cow a little longer, but the person we are buying from says she will be fine and to go ahead and pick her up.  I just want her to grow to her full potential.  Can anyone give me some input regarding what age they wean or bring home new animals?

I have weaned as early as 3.5 months but mainly just because there was another problem such as a cow with a bad hip.  I normally wean from 4.5 to 5 months of age.  That just seems a little early in your case.

I wonder what condition the cow is in?

Many show calf breeders are weaning calves around 3 months old.  We wean our top end ar around 4 months and they certainly don't miss a beat at that age.  Go get her and get her started.  If you have little kids, its that much easier to get the broke out the younger they are.

Totally agree, if they are already eating some sort of feed, half the battle is over with.
