We happened to pick up some Dream On semen that our local rep was looking to move.  For those with experience using him can you share what cow types he works best with and what to avoid?  We're hoping for some moderate framed replacement females out of Maine/Angus based cows.

Thanks!

When I got ready to use him on a first calf heifer, I tried to talk to quiet a few Simmi breeders. He seems to take them down in frame and will make them pretty. I have never seen many dream on's that have a ton of hair. We have one heifer out of a Northern Improvement x WMW/Macho. She is smaller made and finer boned. I definitely like what 3C did on Angus x xx base. There are lots of simmi folks on the board and I am sure some will reply. I don't think Dream On does anything extreme if that makes any sense.

like most in the simmental breed he has (and we have) used him on everything with pretty good success,

i like a powerfull female with medium frame ( not small not big) and needs a little refinement, but we have used him on fancy cool looking show heifers and add power to em too, like i said, he works on about everything.calving ease is great too

anyone know when the clones are going to be marketed? they are over a year old now.

I must be out of the loop. Are there Dream On clones on the ground? Why haven't we heard more about them?

OH Breeder & JWW,

Thanks for the replies.  How is he on structure?  Any concerns with making them too straight?

You aren't too far from us.  He only had a few straws available and we plan on using them.  Thanks for the offer.

Clones to DO? where?

I was just looking on ASA web site at Legacy EPDs and found 5 Dream On clones, bred by Janssen and owned by Yardley, Eckloff (2), Guthridge, and Dodge Stock Farms. They were born 3/11, so I wonder if semen sales on clones is in the works?

I wouldn't worry about the structure on a Dream On at all... Normally he's pretty hard to beat phenotypically... I think the one and only reason you don't see to many of them anymore is simply because there were so many of them for awhile and everyone has been trying to find the outcross to him.  Overall, they're usually pretty sound, with a prettier look to them... they don't tend to be the heaviest muscled cattle in a group but I'd say they normally have enough... hair.. they usually have nice hair but like someone else said not always in abundance.  And just like what was stated earlier he does seem to work on just about any type of cow....it's just getting harder to market the bulls out of him.

Maybe save the semen to you get your hands on a real good donor, use it to flush and retain and some heifers! 5 years from now it will be harder to get, 10 years even harder, I would set on it, flush with it when you get a cow thats truly deserving, and make the most out of the semen
