Best Market steer you ever saw

There are so many differences over the years, how about picking everyones favorite Sugar Ray, fav Who Made Who, Heat Seeker, Heat Wave, etc

good point chambero. i was never around to see many of these calves in person. i didnt even exist lol so my opinions are from the more modern calves

I saw this steer in every stage of his life. As a baby, i made a bold statement in saying that he was my pick to win a major. Don't get me wrong, he was good and needed to win that show, but i disagree about him being the best of all time. He was very small, he didn't use his hock well, he had swelling in his joints, and he was a bit round out of his hip, even though this is covered by him having a prominent tailhead. I liked my steer that won SA in 06 better than this one, but would never dream of calling him an all time great.

The 2006 SA Champion is a favorite of mine.  I just flat out liked him.

Cain glad to see that your still in love with ur steer...he was a good one but you know that the Newman steer that won houston was a true bad ass.

The best one I ever saw was the one Reese Haymes won Ft. Worth with in I think 2000 he won the best steer show in the world going away

Jerod, did u see my first post? I was only comparing mine to Madison Kelly's. By the way, do u have any cows or bred heifers for sale, im trying to put together a small herd, somewhere around 25.

Ya thats the right steer. I remember when my dad got done unloading at ft worth that year, he called home and said "well, everyone's gonna be fighting for reserve, cuz haymes has this deal sewn up."

1996 was a long time ago but if i remember right the manning steer was a full throttle. dont know who raised him but he came through russ harkama.

Conoco must have been a great one.  the old timers liked him a lot, there was a picture of him wining Chicago hanging at Kansas state 20+ years after he won.

Got a text telling me I better get on here........

ACTUALLY......"Chief" (the baldy steer) was  the first calf crop of "DeBull's"  OR "DaBulls" as he was first named.  Chief was the first A.I. calf out of what would become my greatest donor ever named "Hot Coffee", owned by Ed Coffee.  She was a full faced baldy Sm/AN going back to some old Fleckvieh breeding.

She was also the dam of "NO DOUBT".....a full brother to "Chief"..... and "Hot Lips" a legendary donor for Scott Coffee, not to mention SEVERAL OTHERS.

That steer really STUCK in Jerry's head.  When he judged the state fair in 2008, he mentioned him (Chief) in his closing Final Drive speech.  He truly was the BEST calf I've ever raised.  I can still vividly remember where I was standing in that pasture when he stood up for the first time!

The funny thing was, I'd never seen DaBull before.....Tyrone Hullinger was (still is) my hero, and I trusted him enough to describe the type of cow to use him on, and it just so happened HE WAS RIGHT! 

Chief was one of the few steers to ever win the Iowa Beef Expo and the Iowa State Fair.  Laverne Massman bought him out of the pasture for $3500 from me.  Russ Harkema came and looked at him at least a half dozen times that summer, and then ended up buying him out of Laverne's sale for $14,000 with Bob Manning standing right beside him.

Manning's had "Chief's" head mounted and hung it in their basement.

Absolutely the best I have ever seen was the steer of Faber's that won the Iowa State Fair, I believe it was '08. He was the donor to the clone that won this year. These 2 steers also won beef expo and state fair. I personally think the original would whoop the clone's butt.

Thanks for clarification JBH.  Don't know why i had WMW stuck in my head.  That Manning steer was wicked good for his day.

For some reason, I see and hear of this '05 Houston steer shown by Dakota Newman pretty frequently when the "best steer you ever saw" conversations pop up.  I'm proud to say that my dad raised that steer, and he was out of a cow that belonged to my daughter.  Cha-ching.....  yeah hellooooo college fund. <rock>  The day that calf hit the ground (in the cottonwood tree row about 150 yards out my back door) my dad called Copus to tell him that he'd finally done it.  He'd raised one that'd win a major.  I think my dad's exact words were "I got him." and Mark knew what he was talking about when he said it.  We named him silver bullet, because of his unique color pattern.  It takes lots and lots of luck to raise a calf like that, and it has to be in the right hands to reach its potential.  He was good, but I think the Newmans deserve tons of credit for the work they did with him.  The "freak" term is right on the money describing this steer.  He was truly special from the very beginning. 

Dad has raised plenty of good ones, including the bull Collateral Damage (I think I saw him on someone's short list of biggest busts LOL.)  I'm not claiming that dad knew he'd do it, but I don't think raising the Houston steer was a fluke.  But with all that said, now that my kids are showing, I'm ready for dad to raise another major winner!!!  LOL.  Not too shabby for a fella who runs a herd of 32 cows.  Maybe someday we can talk him into keeping a few of the better steers for our own. (lol)
