I am leaving for a 3 week trip this weekend, and have an 8 hour layover followed by a long flight. So...I am looking for a really good book to read. So if anyone knows some great western books they would recommend I would appreciate your suggestions.  :)  <cowboy>

Kenny's Shoes.  Not really western in the sense of the cowboys and indians but tells a cool story of Ken Monfort and how he came to be in the cattle feeding/packing industry.

Get some of the Western Horseman series of books.  I really like the Legends series. If you're not into horses then choose something else. I think they have one on famous ranches as well.

Louis Lamour, Lonesome Dove series and The Sacketts series,  All The Pretty Horses by Cormac McCarthy.  Not a western, but a new release I am wanting to read, The Horse Soldiers, about 12 special forces members who went into Afghanistan on horseback just before the war officially started, fought the Taliban, even took over a village.  Sounds very interesting.

One of my favorite western authors is Elmer Kelton.  His stories are fiction based on Texas historical facts.  I have also read the entire series of Louis LaMour and Zane Gray.

Spirit Horse by Alan S. Evens.  I just finished this book, it's new.  I really enjoyed this read.  It was very hard to put down.  I gave me some great historical insight into the wild mustangs and the native Americans.  I would highly recommend.
