Who is your favorite black baldy simmy bull and why?  I see lots of positive comnents on here for Rendition and Blazin Hot.

Some of those comments have probably been from me...I've had a few calves from both bulls, and they've all done well. They're very different bulls...Blazin Hot is homozygous black & homozygous polled....he's very production-oriented...pretty strong EPDs, calves are deep sided and growthy. Compared to the Renditions, some of them have a little more front end & a little more leather. What I really like about them is they're sound legged and very functional with really good attitudes. The Rendition calves are showier...clean necked, long topped and square. That bull is heterozygous black & hetereozygous polled, and his numbers are kinda plain compared to most of the bulls i'm trying to use, so I probably won't be using him much more. I have a couple of straws left in the tank, and I like the calves so I may use that up. I just have one coming this fall...I have several Blazin Hot babies due pretty soon.

We've also had a few Shear Pleasures that are pretty nice. They're long fronted & long bodied with a nice hip, and they're stylish.

I have a few calves by Hooks Titus and a couple by SS Upscale coming this fall. Other than those bulls, I'm still looking for a good baldy bull, too! I'll be kinda interested to see what names show up on this thread, but I'm not holding my breath there will be many that really fit  what we're trying to do. One thing I think sets the Blazin Hot bull apart is his EPD profile...there just aren't many baldy bulls that have real
strong numbers.  I'm sure there will be some to come along...I'm not sure how many of those will hold up once the proof comes along.

Just looked up the Obsessed bull on Dunk's web site...pretty neat looking calf in his picture. What's the Obsession cow?

For a newer bull id go with RUBY EXCALIBUR, check him out i think you'll like what you see. And of course my older favorite would be MACHO.

Leanbeef you are right, some of the posts that got my attention were yours.  ALTSIMMY, we did put in 3 Excalibur sired embryos this spring that I'm pretty excited about.  Has anyone used Ruby's wide open?

The Montecetos  I have seen are good. No one has mentioned him.

The Dunk bull that was mentioned is a brother to the National champion $51,000  heifer of Kroupas that Bloomberg showed year before last.

Does TNT Tanker have any white on him?  Anyone have any reports on his progeny?

Tanker is solid black as far as I know. We have six Tanker calves in our sale this month...four heifers and two bulls. One of the bull calves is a 3/4 blood baldy out of a baldy cow.

They come moderately small and grow very well. They'll have some extra front end...definitely not show cattle, but I really like them. The two bulls are two of our thickest, heaviest bull calves, and the heifers are broody cow prospects. I think they'll get better and better as they get older, and they'll make nice cows. The other thing I'd say about him is that our calves are extremely gentle. That never hurts, either.

I looked at Fortunate Son last fall and ended up not using him. I've seen a couple I liked, I just haven't seen enough of them & don't hear much about him. He LOOKS solid black in his pictures, but apparently he has a white nostril & he blazes a bunch of his calves. I like his daddy for making mama cows...I just wish his numbers were a little stouter.

I would also throw out Dream Catcher, Cut Above(Fat Butt), and Remington Lock NLoad. Saw several fat butts at Iowa State fair that were very impressive, big boned and stout. Can't say I have been impressed with the Excaliber's that I have seen. I was very disappointed as the ones I saw were very round, hard made and hairless. I used Rendition this year so will know more next year at this time. We'll be showing a Lock N Load and Dream Catcher next year, we like themand have seen several Dream Catchers do well at shows. He really puts a good front end in them.

Good luck

I looked at both DreamCatcher and Cut Above last year and didn't use them. The reviews I've heard on "Fat Butt" have been very mixed. I think he either makes em pretty good or not, and inconsistency scares me a little. I tend to think the Dream Catchers are pretty good...just never seen one in person. For some reason, I think he's been used q lot more in other parts of the country than he has been around here. Also thot it looked like he had pretty heavy scurs in his mature picture...not wild about that really.

Fat Butt is all over the place, from what I have seen. Attached is a Fat Butt calf, 4 months old. Nothing special, needs depth big time. My son will show her next year, but he is only 8 and does not need a competitive calf. The cow she is out of has never missed, so this calf is a bit of a disappointment for us. My suggestion is to breed him to a big gutted cow.  We won't use him again until we find a cow that fits that criteria.
Dream Catcher throws horns! Saw one myself with horns that got dehorned, out of a Macho cow. Good looking calf though.

Can't find him in the ASA database either. I wonder if he is registered?

Another thing I've heard about Dream Catcher is the tailhead sits high and fat butt can make the rear legs too straight.

I'll have to agree with you on that one...she looks a little shallow at this stage of the game. Maybe she'll change for ya. If I decided to use "Fat Butt" it would definitely be on some fairly soggy, sound  Angus cows. He strikes me as the type that might work better on Angus females than on Simmental cows, and that picture of your kinda reinforces that. I'm still not super stoked about him...I'm sure there will be a bunch of em and some good ones. I'm not really the type to use what EVERYBODY else is using so...

When I think of baldies, my first thoughts are always Steel Force, Built Right and Dream Catcher.

In our experience, Steel Force and Built Right breed very similar.  Built Right will make them as soft as any Simmy bull out there.  Steel Force might just add a touch more marketability.

Dream Catcher works good on the right cow, but he will not consistently throw the guts that the other 2 will on the more marginal cows.

Broker is a newer bull that we are hearing lots of good things about.

Yeah...I would agree with the Built Right deal. Man, i wish that bull was homozygous black!

I guess the Steel Force's are apparently pretty good. Honestly, I don't see or hear about many of those in this neck of the woods. I prob woulda used him once upon a time if I coulda gotten semen on him back then.
