I understand that when you use a white bull on black cows you can get a blue roan. My question is how to keep the blue roan coloration in the following generations.  Is it just a crap shoot on the coloration when using shorties?? Thanks

Yes, due to the nature of the roan gene, it's a crap shoot.  The only way to be assured of getting it is what you mentioned a white bull (not Charolais white) bred to a homozygous black cow.

Breeding two blue roans together will end up with 1 white, 2 blue roan, 1 black assuming they are both homozygous black.
