The original breeder of Heat Wave just happened to swing thru the local fair this year. While he was walking thru the barn he gave out some interesting info on the bull. He stated that Heat Wave had close to a 170lb birth weight and that they had to cut the calf out of the first calf heifer, he did state that the dam did live and is still being flushed. He also stated he has fought with Lautner over the BW (Lautner had him listed as 95lb.) hows that for integrity?

I wouldn't trust any listed club calf sire's birth weight. That is a given from what I've heard.

Does his "actual" birthweight matter at this point?  Obviously enough people have used him regardless and had pretty amazing results.... :-\

Just like the birthweight the cows pedigree has changed over time.  I think she started out as a Playboy and ended up beinn a Taz.  Must be he nursed another cow and they got all confused.

Heat Seeker was one of the first pretty small (for the standards of ten years ago) framed bulls to get wide use.  I imagine quite a few people used him on heifers.  I'm almost certain that I remember his full brother - All About You - being promoted for use on heifers.  Not unlike how folks figured you could use Who Made Who on heifers.

Heat Seeker is a long way from Heat Wave relative to birth weights.  Heat Wave is an accident (no pun intended) - that's why he was/is so good at what he does and none of his brothers have been able to replicate it.

Heat Wave's birth weight is irrelevant, if you use him you know the risks you run.  He's not the first - Full Throttle was the same way.  Some of the old purebred exotic breed Chi/Simi/Charolais bulls were a lot worse than these guys.

The good news is that judges are backing off from the "thickest wins" mentality.  The calves winning now have to be pretty nice all-around animals.

Nice post.  I have seen a few of those huge ones out of chi/simmi's where the jackhammer has to be used.

I heard a deal on the farm report show that cow numbers were expected to down next spring because of the number of cows bred to heatwave. ;D
