I have a heifer that just aborted her calf. I know what the recommendations for waiting after a cow or heifer calves out but did not know if the same guidelines would apply after losing a calf. She was somewhere around 5 months along. I am going to try a give her one more chance before shipping her out. Thanks for any help.

Did your heifer pass her placenta right after the abortion?
If the abortion was uncomplicated by a retained placenta, infection, etc,
she should be ready to breed back in about 45-60 days.
However, before you breed her back, I would recommend vaccinating
her with a good prebreeding shot that eliminates most of the abortion
diseases like lepto, vibrio, rednose; ask your vet to recommend a bredding
shot based on what diseases are common in your area.
However, most abortions happen not because of disease but because of some
type of unfortunate problem with the developing baby or problems in the placenta.
Good Luck!

We had a 2nd calver abort last in Feb. She was about 7 months along. I let her go until breeding season this year and bred her back. She didn't stick the first time so I bred her again. Thought she stuck turned in the cleanup bull for a couple of months and she never can back in. Thought she stuck. Went to pull the cleanup bull and while we were sorting he jumped her and tried to breed her. Thought he was trying to have one last fling. 19 day's latter she was bulling again. So we ended up infusing her with 30cc of Genocin and 100cc of saline solution. A couple of weeks later she started passing some pretty nasty looking stuff. Don't know if she will be ok now but if I were you I'd sure infuse her before you try to breed her again.
