We're a ways off from breeding season but wanted to get the opions of the board on what to breed to.  Grant's show heiifer(Ruby)  for this next season(Pictured Below) is a Irish Whiskey X Opal( PB Angus, Northern Impovement, Full Sib to Fred's Northern Gun).  Ruby is PHA Free.  We hope to keep her for the herd and hopefully a future donor.  However, due to economic reasons we may choose to sell her as a bred heifer at the 2010 Nebraska Cattlemans Classic.  If she was 100% intended to be kept as a replacement,  I would not have a big issue with what to breed to.  However, I am looking for a mating that will be popular at sale time.  My bull of choice may not be the wow factor to the majority that will view the catelog.

What heifer bull on a female bred this way would be a popular mating?  Sire must be PHA/TH free.  A few thoughts were DCC New Edition,  Moneyman, or Dirty Hairy.  Is their a Meyer bred bull that is proven calving ease?  In the upcoming Cowtime Sale,  Tripple B has several heifers bred to Mama's boy, anyone know is he proven on heifers?  Climax is a +.9 on BW,  What is a good calving ease EPD for Simi's?  Any other thoughts please comment.  What is the popular calving ease bull?  Maybe Duff Copyright?

Pictured below:
1. Ruby
2. Opal- Her Dam
3. Fred's Northern Gun- Flushmate to Opal

Thanks,

RSC

Ali would be choice to increase maine percentage since whe is Irish Whiskey.
Money Man

Some of the heifer sales, I see some club bulls used and it makes me cringe. That always seems to be a gamble.

What's Ali worth?  I thought a Simi/Maine/Angus mating with a Meyer bull would be popular as well.

When I pick a simmi bull to use on our simmi heifers, I look for a CE above 5 (watch these), ideally I'd like the epd to be above 10.     The problem as I see it  with using some of the Meyer sons is that they are not PB so there is no CE epd on them.   I know EPD's are just a number & all that but I don't like to take chances with my heifers & I'm sure not going to buy a heifer that I have major concerns about.   I like Mama's Boy but won't be using him on heifers until there is enough data to support him as a calving ease bull.   The bulls I would consider of the bulls you listed would be Money Man or possibly the Copyright bull.

Other bulls that come to mind -  Angus - Final Answer.    Simmi - Built Rite, Dream On, In Dew Time.

It's far enough back, How about linebreeding back to Northern Improvement?  What's his semen worth?

SEK lists Northern Improvement at $30.00.  He would definitely make my short list of bulls to consider.

Who Made Who.... calving ease and shes sound enough that you shouldn't have any problems there.  You get her bred to who and I'll bid her up to 1500 at the sale :)

For simmi, I would look at SVF/NJC High Voltage.  He is a Dream On son out of the Ebony Antoinette family and is proven calving ease.  I have the Meyer heifer in my avatar bred to him for a jan1 baby.  Star Power would be an option for a simmi with a more popular name, but I haven't seen enough of them to say that is good or not.  Money Man or Ali for maines, Duff bulls would be ok, but I don't necessarily think they are calving ease.  Rodger's has a bull called Doc that has been pretty popular and the lot 1 heifer in his bred sale (with Reimann and Smith) is an example of his progeny.

LOL, Dusty add a 0 and she's bred WMW. I would however take less than that.  O0

Is High Voltage the one that had a really clubby looking pic on ads run in the steer books a couple of years ago? I have wondered about that bull. Have you seen many? I agree that I don't really consider the Duff bulls calving ease. I know Leo's are promoting the Copyright bull that way, but epd's (and the picture) say he'll be average at best. I hope he is a good calver, but I don't want to be the one to do the experimenting. RSC - if you think the Sim/Maine/Angus would be popular, how bout Dream On. alot of Simmy guys use him on heifers I am told. I guess of the ones that you listed, I like Ali best. I am waiting to see some Dirty Hairy calves before I jump on that wagon, as a few local guys here used a little

I see Hook used some heifers bred to Smokin Joe. I used some Gig Joe on a few heifers. I've also been intrigued with the bull that Guyer and J & J are promoting named Grizzly, 1/2 blood SM. Huston's sale lists 38 hd bred to him and Guyer has a large group of Meyer and Macho heifers bred that way. Brent

High Voltage is the bull that was in the ads a couple years ago.  i have seen numerous calves and they are very nice.  more clubby than most pb simmis, moderate with a ncie look and calving ease with high direct CE epd.  I have included pics of him and a couple calves.

If you want splash with name recognition to get her to bring more, get hold of some Steel Force.  Plus, if you decide to keep her you should still be very happy.  Should be ok on a heifer.  I've seen him and he is a beautiful mature bull in his normal "clothes".

toni you obviously must be getting a big break from class today,  personally i would breed her to a longhorn bull of my neighbors i could get semen on for you, he may throw some color with that irish wihisky in that heifer.  it is important to just get a live calf the first time on a high dollar heifer, then start making these educated decisions.

Chill Factor!! I am gona have to say NOOOO to the longhorn idea, there are bulls that can throw a profitable calf and still be calving ease.

But with that Longhorn influence there's a chance maybe you could get a bucking bull of sorts, can't tell me that ain't positive. On a serious note, I liked the suggestion off Smokin Joe myself. That should be a winner whether you keep or sell her.

do people like to buy pregnant "show" heifers, or one with calves at their side, so they don't have to deal with calving a high dollar heifer and be worried?
