Well folks I am just a young up and comer and looking to get my herd going in the right direction. I want to breed my herd for maternal powerhouses. I would like soem help on selecting bulls to use. Here's what we got
33 open heifers 2 of which are out of a who son, 1 is a half sim angus, and 1 is commercial maine, the rest are purebred angus(about half of these are registered).... This will be there first calf and would like to use one bull for the whole group.

20 registered angus mature cows, if i stick to angus bulls i am going to use outer limits again he really clicked on a couple last year.

20 commercial angus cows, out of registered cows and registerd herd bulls

Special stuff
1. 4 year old who made who daughter who looks like a commercial angus nothin special
2. 2 amazingly good Ext registerd angus cows real deep bodied sound with good fronts, i listed these in the special category becasue i think they have the most potential

Like I said i want to stay for the most part maternal but still want them to have a good look not just a brood cow look. my goal is to  implant the calves from these cows back into my herd to use as club calf producers.

Would prefer to stay away from heat wave and dream on

Any other help ideas are more than welcome

Just my opinion but i would try GIGOLO JOE for f1 cross and calving ease,or i would try BRAD HOOKS bull POWER 2 CHANGE for sim-angus baldies and calving ease.

I think you need to ask yourself "Are you in it for the long haul, or in it for a short, fun adventure?"

Some of these young bulls, by that I mean bulls under 5, are still too young for ME to recommend building a herd on for the long haul. If you simply want to turn a buck in a  year or two, go with the flavor of the year.  I am not trying to be mean, but if you honestly want to build a herd of dependable, predictable momma cows, you have to go with dependable, predictable bulls. Make sense?  I think too many people get caught up with hype and "whats hot this year" rather than looking at pedigrees and studying family lines.

I realize SOMEONE has to "prove or unprove" bulls, but I would prefer it not be me and my checkbook!

Couldn't have said it better.  Why get so excited about the hot new thing?  Unless the hot new thing has been proven over time thru his brothers and sisters.

To breed maternal powerhouses is a great and ambitious goal, so be smart and understand that diversity is a strength. Build towards the same phenotype with different breeds to make you byproducts from those cows more salable to a number of markets. Breed 25 % to the best Angus bulls you can find, 25 % to the best maternal simmys, 25 % to the best maternal Maines, and 25 % to the best maternal clubbies (ie Who). Most importantly have some fun, don't get caught up in the discussion of new vs old or "hot" vs proven...just breed good to good and the rest will work out. Good luck.

I have about 65 EXT cows and I'll make it real easy for you, Nutt-n Butt, I have used the 734 breeding and they are not enough for a straight angus, at least a straight bred EXT, I would consider TJ simmy bull as well, GJ has not proven himself a a female maker yet, I said yet. Don't use NB on a power cow.

I don't know what market you're after, but I believe SMOKING JOE or especially Green Valley's SPECIAL DELIVERY. Both can be used on heifers.

When typing the upper post i knew gigolo joe's name would come up. IMO he isnt a cow changer too much , not saying he isnt a good bull and a defiante for calving ease bull but i want something to really pump up these angus cows.  Not trying to knock the bull at all just not the bull for me right now in this situation.

WMW x Angus is one of the best ways to get good cows to breed a number of ways..you're one generation from producing the best steer you've seen, or one generation from a big time breeding piece.  You could also get some good steers and heifers your first year.

If you're willing to use a carrier, Angus X Irish Whiskey is about as good as it gets for maternal powerhouses.  If you are looking to produce club calf mommas, stay away from the clubby bulls for replacements, if you go that route you have nothing left to breed them to.JMO

Here is what I would consider if I was in your position.
Angus sires
Most of any the Duff,  Ohlde and Griswold owned or bred bulls.

club calf sires
Full Flush
Payback
Who Made Who

Simmy and simmy cross sires
Dream On
Warehouse
Macho
McCarney
Chopper (betting on the come here)
for simmy influence other than Meyer sons I would turn to the Sunset View sires

Maine sires
Carney Man
Irish Whiskey
Chill Factor
Strictly Business
Houdini

I know some of these bull are carriers of carious defects, but the maternal sire power outweighs the downsides to me.
Also check out some of the more maternal oriented club calf female sales (Exposure, Power Plus, K- Dakota Classic, etc..) and mimic their breeding programs.

Lazy H Pathfinder is a blaze faced Dream On son from ABS.  He is a maternal sib to a number of heifers that Drakes showed successfully including a Denver grand champion I believe.  He has good calving EPDs but low growth.  I have not personally seen any calves or talked to anyone about them.

TLM Bouncer is another bull I would look into for their first calf. Later try Irish Whiskey, Chill Factor, JDS Stout, Dr. Who, or maybe a Shorthorn bull to make some good females.
