I am stuck on what bull to breed to my limi cow.    I am limited to what my ABS breeder has in his tank, he has who made who, dream on, sure bet, cowboy cut, pale face, sherriff taylor, and goldmine.    He has not gotten back to me on what angus or hereford bulls he has in his tank.    My calves out of her have been a little tall, and could use a wider base.    I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions.

Who Made Who clone for sure. We used some at a buddy's herd couple years ago and he kept some bulls out of the deal.

if he was a good Abs rep, then he'd find you what you wanted, otherwise you should find a new breeder.

To breed with something that won't work, b/c that's all you got-- is as good as turning her in with some random bull and saving the hassle of AI.

Who made who first choice, depending on what the cow is made like I think Pale Face could be an interesting way to go.  I'd shy away from the pb simmi bulls on a limi cow.  Depending what your end goal is - breeding heifer, show steer, show heifer - the angus bulls he should have available would make some interesting options as well.

I would recommend finding out what Angus sires he has available before I pull the trigger. There is a reason the Lim-Flex is becoming more popular- because it works. It does take a little homework to find which lines cross well with the Limi females (look at the bloodlines that won Denver the last two years), but it is worth the effort. As far as frame and base, adding some British to the mix should give you a more moderate offspring. Going to a clubby bred bull straight out of the gate doesn't have consistent enough results for my liking. How often do you see a killer steer or bull prospect advertised that has a purebred or high % Limi as the dam?  If your goal is a club type calf out of the cow, I would go Angus first and then back to continental/ clubby the next generation.

Yeah...i'd definitely be looking at the Angus bulls real hard. such as I like Simmental & % Simmental cattle, I don't think that's what I'd do on a Limousin female. A couple of those bulls help do some of the things you mentioned, but I don't think it's the best cross for her. The reason we breed Simmental is because of how well they crossed on our commercial crossbred cows back in the early days, and you'll get more heterosis out of a British x continental mating than by going with another continental bred sire. The Hereford thing could actually be interesting, too, depending on the bull. I don't know much about them right now, but they seem to be gaining some steam in this part of the world, and I think they're better cattle than they have been in the past. The champion horned female at our state junior livestock expo this year was as good as any female of any breed there, but I have no idea where she came from or how she was bred.

Out of the Simmental bulls you listed, Dream On would prob be my pick, and i think there's a good chance the calf might not be good enough to justify spending that much on semen. Sheriff Taylor is interesting to me in pictures, but his numbers are weak & I haven't seen a single calf by him. I think Sure Bet could be the worst decision you could make on that kinda cow & wouldn't recommend him at all. Goldmine can make some nice females, but I don't recommend him in this scenario either.

I have seen Who Made Who work very well on higher percentage Limi's.  When Who was really hot, there were quite a few winning Limi steers in the south bred that way.  Yes, I know the offspring won't paper LimFlex, but they will paper Chi.

Have had great luck with WMW and Jimmy the Greek on purebred and LimiX cows. Breeding a few back that way
again this year.

If the cow isn't registered Limousin (you didn't say if it was or not), you're talking crossbred calf. Of the listed bulls I'd go with WMW followed by Goldmine. If your rep has the angus bull Frontman, I think he'd work well on your cow.

my cow is a registered red limousin, I am looking into SAV Brave, SAV Bruiser, SAV Brilliance, Duff Target, and OSU Currency for angus bulls.  I was also looking at the red angus bull Fat Tony.  I have a limi heifer bred to Dream On.  Right now I am hoping for better bred females that will produce a more clubby looking calf.

How are your females bred that crossed well on WMW?, My cow is a grand daughter of Blaque Rulon on the top side, and her MGS is Cole First Down 46D.

Thanks everyone for your advice.

I actually like the idea of the Brilliance bull quite a bit. I'm not familiar with that particular Duff bull, but I do like those cattle and if you want to down size the cow, he'd probably be a candidate to do that just based on what the Duff bulls usually do.

Breeding on cows are Rulons on a First Down daughters and Black Dakota on Angus cows. Calves are jet fronted and powerful. The WMW
has really worked well for us. Breeding some back the same way this fall.

I have seen some exceptional Brilliance calves out of both Rulon and Lodestar backed cows.
BTW what did you end up using?
