Tallcool1- Hank didn't, but friendly got him about 5 times. It attracted quite a crowd of kids.

Ya know......you're SO right. We got "knocked off" at our county fair this year. Had the crowd favorite "SHOW STEER", put on a fitting clinic, tons of attention, and got left standing.
I was kind of bummed but not being a baby about it. That's how it goes, and it's my fault that we weren't fat enough.
About then a few of the kids started tossing around some water balloons, then a few more joined in, then it was on!!!
I pulled up a chair, leaned back, and just smiled and watched these kids...kids that didn't even know each other, join together in a water balloon fight.
It IS about the kids, and the entire experience. Not just the cattle and the show but also the relationships and the fun and learning...the rabbit show and the baby ducks on display. It's all of it.
I'm the moron that thought they were bringing in a carnival and a concert as sideline acts for a steer show...but every once in awhile EVEN I can stop and see its about the kids.
This website is a tremendous resource for data, information, advice...and even reminders that it's about the kids.

It really is important to stop and remember that it's about the kids. Last year at our 4-H show a little girl who comes from a VERY competitive and political family (they'll do anything at all to win) was waiting in the hitching ring with her steer to go into the champion steer drive. She looked at my steer and said "Larissa, I really like your steer. He's so nice, I think he's gonna win." I said "Thanks Kristina, I like your steer too, I think he has a good really chance." She ended up winning Grand and after the show when I told her congratulations, she said "Thanks... But I still like your steer more than mine!" It was just so cute to see her not care at all about winning, she just loves to show and be with the older kids.
