Building a new barn and bad always wanted a cool room in the past but never put one in. Is it worth having a cool room?

It's only worth if you show/sell haired calves. Even then, it depends. Location, location, location! Obviously the north needs it less than the south. Good luck and have fun grooming some hairy beasts  (lol)

Like Annoth said, depends on your location and also depends on how much work you want to put into growing hair. I personally don't have any experience with a cooler, but I live in MN and with a fan running all the time I was able to keep my dairy steers eating and grew about an inch of hair on them over the course of summer (wasn't trying to, just did it) and I did have decent hair growth on my beef steers (only had 2). I think a lot of it has to do with how many animals you are planning to raise at a time and how much time you want to spend rinsing/combing/blowing.

Its like others have said, its about your location.  I am located in Central Texas and I feel a cool room is a must to be competitive with hair calves.  I have used Porta Cools and fans in the past, but the cool room gave us a step up.

I'm up in Ohio and got by without one as a kid but now with my own place and maybe selling a few show calves a year wasn't sure if I should put one in or not. I'm sure I'll be having kids eventually that'll be showing.

We're in Se Okla and it's a must have for us.  As crazy as it sounds we have an OYE heifer that's been in since mid January, not because of the temps but fighting hair loss due to day length.
