I have brought up a similar topic about this a little while ago but I have different questions. First I am wanting to know the in and outs of bull interests. What can you expect to buy them for? What will you make? Whats it cost to collect? I also want to know what people pay for the bulls. When they go look at producers' pastures and pick out the bull, what are they buying the bulls for? Thanks

the ins are money.  the outs are semen and or use as a cover bull.

the outs are upfront costs, selling the upfront costs.

they are buying the bulls to make money.

There are almost as many answers to those questions as there are bulls out there! It depends on what caliber bull ur talking about, where the bull comes from & who's involved in selling him. Most people who are shopping for bulls are looking for a bull to breed cows, and I'd say the majority pay $2-5,000 for full interest/full possession. If you're talking about an interest in a stud quality bull, that's a bigger range and a bigger price tag. A lot of variation among different breeds, but most of those bulls in the breed I'm famiar with sell for $10-50,000 and may have a few partners or several. I think most of those deals get put together between folks who know each other or have done business prior to, meaning not many folks are looking for a partner they don't know. As far as what can be made off of em, I doubt some of em ever make much if anything. The few that hit probably pay pretty good, but you have to sell a bunch of semen at $25/straw before you ever start making money on a bull like that.

the one's that are popular they start stretching the semen quality to pay for the ones that don't work ....
OHHHHHH How true that statement is Freddy. But you better watch out, some of these bull owners and friends of bull owners will try to hang you for that comment cause it is NEVER the semen quality that causes poor conception rates, LOL.

There are so many different answers to this question.

First question, are you looking to own an interest in a bull that you will never have possession of?
Do you want a bull that you can naturally breed your cows too, yet possibly sell some semen on?
Do you want to pay a lot to own an interest in a bull with a big name, but pay big money to possibly make a big payday?
Do you want to pay less to own an interest in a very high quality bull from a less known breeder, but risk not making it big due to the name of the promoters?

There are lots of GREAT bulls that fall through the cracks every year.  Big name promoters do not typically pursue cattle that are not out of genetics that they have a stake in. But on the flip side, purchasing one of these bulls leaves you at a disadvantage when promoting a bull.  People like buying semen from people that are on top.  They are even willing to take gambles on unproven bulls that are promoted by prominent breeders (or should I say promoters).

I still believe in the philosophy of owning great cattle, not great names.  But I am not getting rich either from the promo bull world, so take it for what it's worth.

We have a great one in the pen right now that is not out of the "popular" sires, but is sure worth promoting.  Will just have to see how that turns out.
