A frame 6.5 for a Charolais calf in Canada??? He must be a midget. Looks ok in the picture  but thats not big enough for me. We need Charolais to be growthy and pack on pounds not be glorified angus.

I think its a little harsh to call a frame 6.5 bull a midget but its your opinion. He certainly is not the biggest bull in the pen (far from it actually) but I'd say he is middle of the road to smaller in frame yet right at the top for natural muscling and overall thicknesss. Sure he is being fed well but at 10 months he is over 1000 lbs - that's still got some perforemance. Trust me there is no red angus who look like him.

He sounds like a very good animal to me and most people that don't want to pull calves and had any experience with those great big bulls would agree ...It's just
like judging, it's one man's opinion of what he can make work and make money cause we all need that ....

Charguy - I like him  8) and I'm no Charloais fan, mainly because of the qualities that SJC posted that your bull did not have.

Charguy,

What is the cow like that he is out of?  Any notable about her?  Any pictures?  Her production record?
Also do you own at least a piece of this calf?  Has he been creep fed?

Hi Mark.

Yes he has been on creep - he has been with my friends show calves since July. He is getting fed well no doubt about it.

The cow was purchased in a dispersal sale last year. Her first bull calf was shown and then was used as a clean up bull and sold as a 2 yr old to a commercial breeder. Her 2nd calf was a heifer calf who sold with her in the dispersal sale. Ill add a picture of the cow for you to see - she isnt big framed very moderate and thick with a nice udder.

I have an option to market semen on the calf in Canada - we will see what happens. I have to make sure there is a market for him in Canada before I go to the expense to collect him. The breeder has interest in the calf from the US and Canada. The breeder has told me if he does sell him he would like to draw him for his own use - he doesnt think there is a big market for semen in Canada anymore. So whether or not I choose to sell some - ill get some semen to breed some cows too myself. Thats what I am excited about.

I think that is a very useful bull,, but probably won't be accepted by clubby breeders.

At 96 pound BW they wouldn't use him since they wouldn't be able to pull as many calves as out of Heatwave and similar bulls.  ;)

Thanks LLBUX - thats the type of honest opinion I am looking for. 96 lbs doesnt scare me but I am sure it will scare some. I would hate to try to market a bull and then have everyone mad because he isnt an easy calver.

Hi vcsf:

Yes - they are going to sell pick of the 4 bulls they have going to the event. The red calf here would be my pick but they have a Bluegrass calf who looks pretty good as well. His picture in my opinion is a little better then he is in person and he could use a little more hoof for me but nonetheless he is a good calf as well. The Revelation calf isnt as thick - good heifer type bull and the Freedom is good just not the calibre of the other 2.

Im hoping my name gets picked for the draw! That would make my year. Maybe there will be some other bulls there that would excite me as well - but i am pretty sure id take the red guy here.

Charguy,

When does Transcon think they can get the catalog up online? I know that they don't finalize the sale lots until November 15, 2010 so it may be next week this time?

I'm not sure Mark - I see the simmental sales the day before are up now on the site. Its not that far off you would think it would be out pretty quick.

Maybe they won't send it out and ill buy the calf cheap - that would be ok by me

As for getting this calf cheap remember this is a showcase sale.  I would expect this calf to go for all he is worth.  Other people will support this sale because they have similar breeding and want to make sure they don't go cheap.
If you want a herdsire quality bull I would talk to the people dispersing their herds (PBar3, Stauffers etc.).  You may be able to get a older proven bull for a good price.

I was only kidding Mark - I'm sure the calf will sell strong. I'm not a big fan of buying old bulls - I'd rather buy a son and keep him around a few more years.

The sale book is up on Transcon site now in case you wanted to take a look. Some really good cattle in the sale - it is a good representation of the brred in Alberta

Here's the sale report:

That red factor calf that Charguy liked so much went for $ 10,000.
The Full French Bull calf I liked went for $ 21,000.
The next bull to watch is at the PBar3 sale where HBSF Specialist is selling.  If you are looking for a Charolais herdsire he is my pick.
