Since everyone else is contributing calf pictures, I thought I would get everyone's opinion on this guy!  While out checking cows, he decided he needed his picture taken and cocked off for the lens.  He is a mid-march bull calf and was 75lbs at birth.  NO...he's not clubby bred, but a purebred angus bull calf out our herd sire RTM Top Shelf who is a Grid Topper X 8180 X 6807. His dam is a CF Right Design 1802 X TC Forefront 1205.  He'll have nice EPD's as well, and is from the Evergreen Erica cow family from Marvin Kramer in IL.  Looks like he has some future...the dilemma is whether he'll be more valuable as a bull prospect, or a registered angus steer prospect!  Here in MN, not sure if he'd gather enough of a premium as a steer to justify cutting him.  However, I'm sure other states have some nice incentives to drag around a cool breed steer at some of the shows.  What do you guys think??  Still time to decide...  ;D

Cool dude.  My suggestion is look around and see if you find a calf you like better to show, if so leave him be, if not cut him.

Our boys aren't old enough to show steers, so he will be sold at some point!!  Just not sure if there would be more interest selling him as a steer or bull.  Also, after several people asked about his sire, here is his yearling photo from RTM Cattle Co...

BCC, glad to see Top Shelf is working out great for you.  He seems to have really stamped his calves with the look on a variety of different types of cows.  Can't wait to see more pictures.

I am not an angus fan myself, i am more into maine anjou and shorthorns. Anyway that calf is dam nice. I would probably sell him or keep him as bull, but see what he looks like in a couple of months and then decide. He would also make you or someone else a very nice steer to show. Looks like he was a lot of life ahead of him and would make someone a nice bull or steer.  :)

Doesn't it cost money to advertise in the circuit??  ;)  Thanks to everyone for the positive comments, and PM's inquiring about him!!  Looks like I'll be busy trying to get more pics of him, and his penmates!!

For those that were interested in some other pics of this bull prospect, I got a couple the other day that turned out nice.  It's fun to see how this guy develops, and he really is keeping that cool look to him!  ;D

I meant either as a promo bull(cost) or a steer winning at a show(which is free).

I don't know how it works anywhere else, but a registered Angus steer at our state fair would carry a 1000 premium, but that's as far as I have ever seen an Angus steer get, they just don't have near enough power to compete for the top slots so in Kansas at least he would be worth more as a bull if you have a market for him.

I would say keep this guy as a bull. Good Angus genetics bring some good money.

My only reservation on keeping him a bull is 8180 in his pedigree. Isnt that one of the bulls with a genetic defect? Maybe I am wrong.  But you could always get him tested too...

No...8180 is free of all genetic defects, and I don't think he is even mentioned in the rumor mill for anything else!  Perhaps you are thinking of Precision 1680??  8180 is a son of Traveler 71 and out of the great Sitz Everelda Entense 1137...one of the queens of the angus breed.  Good to go in the pedigree dept!!  ;D
