Hey everyone!
I know this topic was done earlier in the calving season but was wondering where things stand now with everyone.

We have 29 calves on the ground. 14 heifers, 15 bulls. 2 to go. Last year we had more bulls than heifers.

In my 12 years of keeping records here this is the first year that we have had more heifers than bulls.

11 Heifers (8 in a row!), 3 bulls....2 left to calve.  Had 11 calves in 18 days...all out of my yearling angus bull that bred naturally.  Guess next year is an expansion year and not a year to sell bulls!  ;D

35% heifers, 65% bulls on 57 head calved out.  last 4 in a row were heifers to help close the gap.

Seeing how I tend to breed them later than most, I expected more bulls than hfrs.

11 Bulls -- 2 Hfrs -- pretty much as expected.

Looking at the above responses, most got more hfrs than bulls. The natural service from the young may just show that he was REALLY active -- hehehe.

One year I bred everything a few hours earlier than I normally do hoping for replacements, had 9 hfrs that year with only 1 bull -- (ALthough he was sposed to be a hfr and one of the hfr was to be a bull - ARGH)

Any way -- had a good year -- for the most part -- had a c-section that I didn't plan on, but saved all the calves.

Hope every one is doing great.

We unlike most would like to get a few more heifers than bulls. How long after standing heat do you usually AI???

59 bulls, 63 hfrs.  On a side note I used hfr plus, I'm over 90% bulls on those

After 4 years of going over 70%  heifers, I am at 8 bulls and 5 heifers with only 1 to go.

Running about 30% bulls this spring (all natural service, by a yearling and a 2 year old), which is more than last fall which was 13% bull calves (just a few AI's, natural service by two 3 year olds).  Don't mind bein' heavy on the heifers in the spring, since we don't sell many spring born steer prospects anyway, but in the fall that really hurts...

Hilltop -- I neer breed anything here until they have absolutely quit doing anything, and then wait 4-6 hours on most of them. I want them all done, tired and resting before I go breed them.

Most cows will stand for atleast 12 hours, many if not most of them closer to15 hours depending on time of year. Doesn't matter to me when they started, but I want to know when they quit trying to ride anything else.

Male cells swim faster but do not live as long, so over the long haul -- (MAny cows) you will see a better bull ratio if you give them a little more time. For example, if you get anxious and breed them just when they are getting done, you could be 50/50 or slightly heavier on hfrs.

If you wait for several more hours, the odds will lean toward more bulls -- it has worked for me for lots of years, plus, your conception will be VERY good.

TIP -- Always breed the cow when it is convenient for "HER", not for "YOU".  Lots of cows are rebred every year for a simple reason -- and that is timing!

Not gonna work for every one or every cow, but the averages will show over time!

Good luck to all -- Terry
