I am looking for a little clarification on buying pregnancies. As I understand it you are buying the unborn calf. Then do you receive the calf at weaning? Or am I wrong in my understanding? I know this is a hard question to answer with out having specific animals listed but what is a general range for buying a shorthorn pregnancy?

Thank you.

You take home the recip cow and have to take the risk of calving problems. Usually its a 60 day pregnancy that is guaranteed,  It does not guarantee a live calf. I would also look at the recip cow to see attitude and size.

As a general if you are truly buying a pregnancy, then you get the recip and the unborn pregnancy.
Shorthorn pregnancies can be all over the board. Most of the time you can buy a sexed heifer pregnancy from $4000 to $6500 depending on the bloodlines. I have seen them sell for as much as $16000 but you usually won't see anyone let one go for less than that $3k to $3500 range because they have almost that much in one.

Thank you for the information! I'm just getting started and it looks like there is a lot of exciting opportunities in the Where Future Generations Are Created Sale in Louisville. I wish I could be there but I'll have to do my shopping from home. I'd definitely like to get  a hold of some of the semen lots.
