i had a calf born a couple weeks ago and it was out of a first calf heifer. we had to pull him. when he came out it appeared as if his head may have been swollen. we gave him some colostrum and eventually he started to nurse and we thought everything would be fine unlike most calves he had a big belly. we let him out into the pasture with the rest of the calves like 5 days ago went out yesterday around noon and he looked bloated but not to bad.. later on we went out to check on the calves and we was bloated.  we gave him medicine and put a hose down his throat but it didnt help. the next morning he was dead. any idea what happened to cause him to bloat? we have never had a calf not on creep and getting just a little milk bloat before.

From your description, it sounds like a clostridial problem. Do you vaccinate with both anti-toxin and C&D toxoid? If you find anymore acting uncomfortable & bloating up or kicking @ their sides. 10cc of anti-toxin orally & 10cc as an injection along with penicillin is the best treatment that I know of. It can/is very fatal if left alone. If you have to treat I would also suggest vaccinating with the toxoid vaccine @ the same time.
