calf for Okotos..is this a genetic defect

this 1/4 maine heifer, a JSAR in focus x countess/ BC Teacup  was calved Feb 1 here in kansas... I have noticed her ears have stopped growing.... is this a genetic defect? do you suppose I should have the vet put her down

Did you guys have any cold weather where her ears could have been frost bit after the calf was born? It is hard to tell but the calf looks fine except for the ears being small. I don't know about it being a genetic defect and I have never had any calfs like that. But I have had calfs get there ears frost bit and they stop growing in the area of the ear that was frost bit. Put the calf down? I wouldn't if the calf is healthy besides his ears being small and the calf is acting normal.

Bingo.. it was really cold that day and night... she peeled of part of her nose also... was waiting for BCCC or someone to tell me he would be happy to care for her and her "disease"

Yes when they are new borns and there ears freeze, then that part of the ear that was frost bit will fall off and not regrow. I have seen calfs that had severe frost bite on there ears as calfs and literly have very little nubs as ears. They can get frost bite on their nose also, it was hard to tell in the pic but thats what it looked like to me.

JBZ --- you wouldn't happen to have any lake side property in AZ for sale do you?? I would bet there'd be some buyers here on SP -- for certain at least you'd get a request for info from BCCC !! hehehehe (clapping)
