Calving ease shorthorn bull?
« on: February 24, 2013, 11:50:03 PM »
I have a gizmo heifer, red and white, looking for some suggestions on some calving ease bulls?  I was leaning towards jakes pround but thought I would see what else is out there.  She is great on a profile, could use a little more power and capacity, but has a good maternal look.  Dont know if there is a calving ease bull that will help this heifer? Thank you

Jake's Proud Jazz. Hands down the nest calving ease shorthorn bull. Calves should be 70-80 pounds. You also will add thickness and stoutness. His semen is $50 a straw but I would say it is well worth it. Other good options are AR SU LU Tonic and Captain Obvious

I have the next great replacement for Proud Jazz.  Smooth Jazz.  Semen will be $35/straw.  We are using him on all of our heifers.  He is TH/PHA clean.

He has a -Epd for BW.

Thanks for the consideration.

I haven't self promoted for a while on this site so.... I would recommend my calving ease shorthorn bull A&T Renegade. Available at cattle visions $25 per straw. Calves are consistently unassisted so far this year out of heifers. Very nice looking calves with lots of good real world traits behind the bull.
Functional, real world Shorthorns are the answer for hybrid vigor on Angus cattle. Increase marbling and maternal traits while creating superior cows and adding more pounds to your calves at weaning.

I will self promote as well.  I have been hesitant to call our bull calving ease until I had used him myself on heifers.  After two calf crops I am going to call him calving ease.  Elbee Throw back has had an average of less than 70 pounds on 28 calves.  His heaviest has been 86 pounds.  We have bred him only to heifers and we have had the driest year on record but his calves come easy and really grow.

Yea.... or 102lbs  Now with that im not saying he isn't a heifer bull, but as far as the best CE Shorthorn bull is a fetch.  If you are looking for a show calf then Jazz has to be close to the top of your list.  But if you are looking for just a live calf then look at some Sneed breeding, Double Duty, JR Breeding, CO, etc... But $50 for JPJ is still definatly worth the money.
I like Cows.  That is all.

His full brother Proud Star is half the price, excellent quality cattle.... check out sek's catalog or contact us for semen.

I have bred Proud Jazz to first calf Maines, first calf Shorthorns, and some first calf Clubbies. Never had an issue with any of them. Never pulled one, never had one above 80 pounds. Proud star is another good option. I just say Jakes Proud Jazz is worth it because he is proven.

Other than the extra sheath, I kind of like Proud Star's more performance-oriented look.

He's a good rip. The Chalk draw's 'Em!
