I was wondering if there is an age limit or what all was involved. We have a donor that will be turning 14 this year and I had thought about getting insurance on her. Can I? Will it cover it if the cow if lost to Old Age? Would I have to sell her to a family member without my last name so she could be considered "a newly acquired animal"? Just wondering if anyone has ever tried this..

This is just my opinion but here it is. I think that as long as you have a vet write up "health" papers for your cow and she has a permanent ID., the insurance company will insure her for as long as you want to pay the premium. I don't think that you need to "hide" anything from them in order for her to "qualify" for being insured. I would just call whomever you want to deal with and put things into motion. Again, JMO.

We pay $100 per cow per year that we insure. The price goes up to $120 when the cow is 9 and older. This insures for $2000. The only thing it won't cover is death due to calving. You can insure for more. Not sure how much the price would increase. A vet would just have give a clean bill of health.

Where or from whom do you get insurance for your cattle? I have at least 3 head I would like to have insured. One is older but the other two are younger cows. Any info would be apprciated.

Contact the Hartford Insurance co. They can give you an idea of their rates and guide you to an agent in your area.

If you're asking me, we use Markel Insurance Company (630) 232-2100.

By the way we did have to use it once a few years ago and the insurance company was good to work with. We thought we were going to have to use it again this year when a truck struck one of our cows. We had flaggers out and everything while moving the cows from one pasture to another. Well the driver had a seizure after talking to one of the flaggers and then hit our cow killing her. His insurance paid us instead.

So far all we know is our insurance will pay for an unexpected death except death due to hard calving. I think if a vet gives your old cow a clean bill of health then your good to go if she does die of "old age."

i am an agent in KS, OK, and Iowa and write policies on cattle... the Hartford is where I write most of these policies.  They have different kinds of policies for cattle depending on what you want them for and to cover.  They do have a Full Mortality policy.. this is what I usually write on show cattle or higher valued donor cows and premiums are largely based on amount of coverage you are wanting on the animal.  the one thing for the Donor or pregnant cows is that, most companies, if the animal is pregnant at the time the policy is written will put an exclusion for the first year that death due to calving would not be covered.
