Heres my situation. I just got my AI certification at the beginning of the year and have been breeding my neighbors heifers free of charge ( he just pays cost) because I felt he was taking a risk on my inexperience. Now that I have some practice under my belt I woud like to start turning a little profit of of my investment. A friend of the neighbors has asked me to breed his two heifers, so my question is what is a fair price to ask for an AI service?

Do your state laws pertaining to veterinarians require any licensing, etc.?  You will want to make sure you are in compliance once you start charging for services.

People around here charge $12 to $15 per head, depending on if you bring the cattle to them or they come to you. If there is only two, and driving is involved, charge a gas surcharge as well.

This is just my opinion, but until you have bred say 300 to 500 hundred head you may want to just ask for your out of pocket expenses. It's hard to find enough cows to practice on when you are just learning. That way you can also give potential clients some of your conception results and possibly use them for a reference. JMO. I charge $20 & have been breeding since 1987.

I charge a $10 trip charge. $5 a head to breed but I also make a little bit on the semen. But I also order 10-20 of each bull and they still get it cheaper than what they could have got it for.

I agree CAB I bred at least 500 head before I started charge to breed.
