Well the kids were up early today and my almost 8 year old son was watching the news and they were talking about the swine flu and he is genuinely worried about it. His school is mostly hispanic and he is worried about getting sick and his firends. What do you tell them? I told him to wash his hands a lot today and get his buddied to do the same, also that there were no cases in Colorado and that I would tell him if and when there was, but not sure what else to say. You did the right thing. However it's not a predominately hispanic population that has it in the US. At least I don't think so. You might want to be carefully stereotyping it especially to a child, they repeat everything!!!
Want to talk about extremely depressing, we have had a trip booked to Puerta Vallarta for a year and we are suppose to leave the end of May!!!

The idea is to send every child with a fever home and keep them home 48 more hours after their last flu like symptom has passed.  It is not really more prevalent in the hispanic population, but more prevelent in the populations who have or are around someone who has recently traveled to Mexico.....Can you say Spring Break.....which is about everybody or someone you know.

Don't panic, trust me, when it is time to really panic, we will know.

PS:  California declared a state of emergency to release funding sources......sorry knabe, but your state is one of the brokest!

PSS:  Wash your hands, repeat, wash hands, do not chew on the ink pens down at the bank, no hugging in church for a while, stay off the airplanes, did I say wash your hands?

Tell your kids that there is a medicine out there that will take care of it.   If your children show flu symptoms, get the doctor to give you a prescription for Tamiflu in the first 24 hours and it will really reduce the severity of the illness.  This strain does respond well to both Tamiflu and Relenza.

Just so I dont get PMs telling me how prejudice I am I did not tell him that hispanics are getting it. He brought that up so that is what I had a hard time explaining. I could not say that its "Ok son you have just a good of a chance getting it as your friends". He is worried not only of getting sick but his friends getting sick. I just cant wait till school shuts down.
That is a great idea Cowz to tell him about the Medicine, that should do it as long as he doesnt hear about more deaths.
Box are you going on your trip?

Tamiflu is being pulled and will be held in tight reserve in allot of states. It will be used for only confirmed positive patients. If you think it is swine flu that is not enough. They can screen with a test made by Binex. This particular flu is part of influenza A strain. If you present with flu like symptoms to the hospital you will screened and your risk factors will be assessed. If you are positive on flu screen with strain A it will be considered presumptive positive an til they can get nose swabs etc back. If you come up positive for only strain B or negative on screen you will be considered negative. Most deaths related to Swine Flu are from Pneumonia. Usually strikes children under 5 and people over 65 or compromised immune systems. There is no treatment for the flu they only treat the symptoms of the flu. But, pneumonia is the biggest killer.

I told my little sister we dont have pigs, so she couldn't get it.

Please dont tell people that people are already saying dont eat pork you can get the swine flu there is no truth in it that. Our hogs have actually been vaccinated against the H1N1 virus which is the mutated virus that is being spread by human to human contact swine Flu actually has very little to do with Hogs except the virus mutated from swine in Mexico.

I agree with that it is mis-named.  Has anyone seen what the hog market has done over the last few days?  It's dropped like a lead balloon.

Good idea to let them know about the Tamuflu.  I didn't think about that.

seems to have something to do with swine

Swine flu is common in swine and rare in humans. People who work with swine, especially people with intense exposures, are at risk of catching swine influenza if the swine carry a strain able to infect humans. However, these strains rarely are able to pass from human to human. Rarely, SIV mutates into a form able to pass easily from human to human. The strain responsible for the 2009 swine flu outbreak in humans (a strain of influenza A virus subtype H1N1) is believed to have undergone such a mutation.[1]

The flu virus is perhaps the trickiest known to medical science; it constantly changes form to elude the protective antibodies that the body has developed in response to previous exposures to influenza or to influenza vaccines. Every two or three years the virus undergoes minor changes.

from what i've read, it can not spread by eating pork.

Can people catch swine flu from eating pork?
No. Swine influenza viruses are not transmitted by food. You can not get swine influenza from eating pork or pork products. Eating properly handled and cooked pork and pork products is safe. Cooking pork to an internal temperature of 160°F kills the swine flu virus as it does other bacteria and viruses.

I think the numbers of cases are being severely under diagnosed.  We have a friend in California who's child was taken to the ER with every symptom of Swine Flu, yet they still would not do the swab test to verify.  We have a several friends take their kids in to get tested due to fevers, etc, and those medical professionals would not test them either.

Sending kids home from school when they have a fever, and keeping them home 48 hrs after the fever has subsided is all fine and dandy.  Except, the swine flu can be spread for 48 hrs before symptoms appear, and the virus can continue to be shed 10 days after the symptoms are gone.

I agree, there is no need to panic, but people should not just ignore it.  Vigilantly washing hands is a good start, but that will not just stop this thing from spreading.  It is pretty good timing for this to be spreading since schools will be releasing for the summer, and the large congregations of kids in buildings will be reduced.  Who catches the flu can not be stereotyped, but if you look at the states where it is most prevalent, it is also the states that have the greatest traffic of people from Mexico, legally or illegally.  Our area is very high.
