Have a Feb. Hereford Heifer that has a chronic and I mean chronic dry cough.  What could be the problem and the solution?  She has no apparent discharge and/or any other symptoms just a bad dry cough.  Thanks for any advice and/or help.

A few quick questions to help analyze the situation. Where are you located?  What has the weather been like there?  How long has your heifer been coughing?  What have you doctored her with and how long ago?  Did she ever have any health problems as a young calf?  What has she been vaccinated with?

Located in Georgia.  Until lately it has been extremely hot and dry.  She has been coughing for over a month and I have not treated with anything.  She was fine as a calf as we purchased from a reputable breeder for a show heifer.  She has been vaccinated with all of the normal calf vaccines.

I'm sure like everyone else you hate to call the vet for every problem, but in your situation I think it wouldn't be a bad idea to just talk to a vet.  See if they can give you some insight.  It is hard for anyone of us to understand your situation when we cannot be at your facility and see the heifer, her housing, her feed, the weather, and many other things that could factor into the equation.  It is always better to be safe than sorry.  Best of luck with her and let us know what you find out.  :)

Vet said it appears some scarring from perhaps pneumonia as a young calf.  Said there was really nothing that could be done for it.

Well I sure hope she gets better with time, or at least well enough that you can show her and she can be productive.  Good luck with her.

If the lungs are scarred hot weather always makes it worse. There have been a couple times when a I have seen a chronic that was barely getting by in cool weather just flat died when it got hot.
