CIDR- HELP!!!

So...even though I have used CIDRS MANY times in the past, I had a complete brain lapse and screwed this deal up this time.

Day 0 Insert CIDR and gave Lute instead of GnRh

Day 7 Pulled CIDR and gave GnRH instead of Lute

Day 9  Today...of 19 head I have 1 in heat and just realized what I did.  A friend did this last year and I thought.."What an idiot!"  Karma?

Where do I go from here????

Your GnRH shot at Cidr pull should of had little to no effect. Still have the Cidr's? If you do wash them up put them back in day 14 to cows that show no heat then lute again day 21. Or just lute day 14 because you kind of have ovsynch going on. JMO...

You bet, I have been using Cidr's a long time and never have great luck. Been using MGA thru the feed last 2 years, it works great and is cheap and you only have to handle them 2x. Once to lute one to breed.

what is mga and how does it work. were can you get it at and the cost thanks scott

MGA is a feed progesteron (spelling?) And don't quote me it's like .5 mg/hd/day. Ask your feed man/vet/semen salesman for specifics. Anyway you feed mga for 14 days then leave cattle alone for 19 days lute then breed ones in heat then Time AI 80 hours after lute. I average 77% on 2 sets of 27 last summer in the blazing heat. Cows 7 days before lute you are suppose to give GnRH but I didn't and was 2 for 2 on them. Cost like 14 cents a hd for the entire 14 days.

I may have to try MGA... anyone else have any %'s of cidr's vs. this additive?

We've used MGA & Lute to synch groups of heifers with mixed results.    Consumption can vary so if you are feeding a group of heifers, you almost have over feed it to make sure they all get enough.    You can also get a bad or old batch and it won't work.      When it works, it works good, but your synched group will not be as tight.  When it doesn't work, it doesn't work and you have wasted your time. 

Kanshow I will disagree. I breed 500-750 head a year. Hands down mga flat out works. Consumption is a must , if you can't get them to eat it you shouldn't use it in the first place. I got 16 hd due 2-23. 16 due 3-8.  Custom bred some heifers they got 11 due within 3 days of each other. Whenever you question the product throw it away and get new stuff.

Not from personal experience, but I have heard MGA works very well on heifers, with poor results on mature cows.  Again, not from experience, we always use CIDR's on the cows and have few enough heifers we just send them to a neighbor.

MGA on cows you must give GnRH 7 days before lute. Just like with Cidr's. I'm just saying better results with tightening up the breeding window, 14 cents compared to $10. I can't afford Cidr's. Plus to do Cidr's right you should lute the day before you pull them which means you have to handle cattle yet another time. And on heifers and cows on pasture you should only Cidr for 5 days which makes it hard for me to keep a resynch schedule on big numbers. Ten years of data show me like 40% preg rate on Cidr's and last 2 years only heifers and a couple cows I was 77% on MGA. I like getting them pregnant and saving money and time!

I do not normally feed loose feeds so I would have to add in additional expense. Feed ingredients and mixing plus MGA.

Yes this is true. Corn or distillers or whatever works great but just say you have 25 heifers/cows. Give them 50 lbs a day with MGA in it for 14 days. That's 700lbs. With corn @ $200 ton right now you would be right at $75 for everything, MGA and corn. Under $100 to get it bagged, weighed and delivered. Still saving $6 hd.....+ added gain or save hay/pasture so your not just out that $75-100. And your going to get cows bred sooner which means calf born earlier and if a calf is born 21 days sooner with current market you do the math. You just paid for the MGA, corn, and most likely semen.
