I am currently thinking of purchasing a clubby heifer. But I’m worried about her being a good cow as well as calving problems. I wouldn’t say that she’s built overly clubby. Heifer is Loaded 4 Bear x Front & Center. Beautiful heifer and I’d love to have her, but nervous as far as her being a momma. I’ve read that it’s kind of a hit or miss with clubby cows, though more a miss. Any thoughts?

You are correct. It's a craps shoot. You can get lousy cows out of purebreds also. I say if shes feminine in her makeup and design, and you like her, give it a go. Cull her or she doesn't meet your expectations after her first calf.

Our experience has been good with them. We have been keeping clubby heifers as replacements since 07. Among the sires of these females have been All About You, Eye Candy, Gigolo Joe, Boarwalk, Who Made Who, and Monopoly. From those cows we have kept some of those females that were sired by I-80, Daddy's Money, and Smokin' Joe.

The biggest factor we contemplate when keeping them is the strength of the female behind them.

As far as breeding goes, we don't challenge them until after their second calf. For the most part, we use calving ease angus bulls like Connealy Thunder, Soo Line Motive 9016, Werner EA Motivation 2031, Connealy Right Answer 746 and SAV Angus Valley 1867.
