Coalpit Creek Leader 6th daughter and calf

I thought I'd post one of "Easy's" daughters on here. I had to turn the cows in on some hay ground a couple weeks ago due to lack of rain. Of course, we got some rain last week just when some other hay was getting ready to bale!

This bull calf is sired by "YY Duke of Earl 186Y". He is "YY Duke of Abernathy 260A". The 2 year old dam is "YY Irenes Dream 187Y".

Beautiful pair!!! I hope "Easy's" grand daughters look just like his daughters!

Now I am really looking forward to getting some " Easy " calves. I think I better be getting some more semen as well!  That is one good looking female! I don't care if you consider yourself a show type person, or a commercially oriented person, I think you would have to agree that this female describes the words " functional and sound" in beef industry terms!

Ralph was named a builder of the breed a couple of years ago and in my opinion he is one of the most worthy recipients. He lives right in the middle of commercial country where Angus is truly king (more so than even the rest of NA). Ralph has a vision and program to compete and I think he is succeeding. I read some of these other threads where there is whining and complaining about the association. At the end of the day it's the breeders responsibility.

The cow above is an ideal looking female but she is very typical of the "Easy" daughters we saw last spring. Their dams are all very functional attractive medium framed cows and I think the Easy daughters surpass them as a group, a breeding program that is really working (thumbsup)

Being the well known (legend in my own mind) I have suggested to Ralph Larson and Gary Kaper that for a small amount (5 straws each) on Coalpit Leader-and that cool red bull of Capers that I would call and hassle Cattle Visions-and SEK and suggest a STRICTLY calving ease section  for Shorthorn bulls-with those two (or Larsons roan bull calf from last year or year before) Capt Obvious,Jazz,some of the Jazz progeny-ALM Chiller-AT Renengade:Bonnels Red Storm bull,Capiche,maybe some of the other Jungels bulls if they felt like it-and others.Of course they could do that too-ITS A NO BRAINER THAT THE CHANGE IN FASHION IN SHORTHORNS IS HERE BY NECESSITY-and Sullivan's LTD EDITION descendents are starting to make thier way to the general population by default-which they should-and yup-they are good.If they(Gary Kaper and Ralph Larson) each did one jump-for 150-200 straws-I can almost guarantee it would sell in a reasonable amount of time:now that lightening flash of intuition aughta be worth at least 3 straws on each bull ALONE O0 <beer>

That's a shorthorn cow. That's a maternal cow. I absolutely love her. I've read Mr Larsons thoughts on another site and we've chatted. To me, him and Mr Kaper are the ones to emulate. Onward and upward gentleman.

I must say that it was nice to get up this morning to see such positive comments. Thanks to you all! I Baled hay until pretty late, so am a bit groggier than usual this morning. Mark and SH4US, I think Cattle Visions has semen available. I released some to Lance early last spring, but the listing information must have been lost in the shuffle, as it never showed up on their website. We don't have a production sale as yet, but do private treaty. Coalpit Creek Leader 6th ("Easy") will go back into collection this fall.

Brock-I feel that this bull really "stamps" his calves. His daughters are all very similar in type and kind. I am pleased with their udder structure, seemingly rich milk, fertility, early sexual maturity, calving ease, and the ability to maintain body condition.

Okotoks- I'm pretty sure you will be pleased with your new junior herd sire. It would seem you're giving him a good test! Your calf's full brother was the top Steer of Merit at last years County Fair. My son Thor has had steers attain this status 4 of the last 5 years. The local "non-black" bias is softening!

As I've tried to make clear on our website: As a Breed, we don't have room to make mistakes. More and more commercial cattlemen are looking to infuse some other blood into their traditionally black herds. However, unless these folks have a good experience, we will not get another shot.

Good looking bunch.  What kind of weening and yearling weights are you getting/expect out your leader calves?

Nice looking animals!  He does have a set of testicles on him doesn't he (calves do too)!  (clapping)

CF-The average 2012- 205 day weights were as follows:
Coalpit Creek Leader 6th bull calves-693 lbs (overall 2012 bulls averaged-675)

CPCL 6th 365 day-1,011 lbs. (Overall yrl. bull average=993)

These bull calves were all pasture wintered with free choice grass hay and hand (bunk) fed 8-10 lbs whole oats (depending on the weather) They also had access to free choice salt/mineral. I was satisfied with their growth under this ration, but they certainly weren't fat!

AJ-  Yes, semen is available. The bulk of it is stored at Genex Hawkeye West in Billings. I think that Cattle Visions still has some if you'd like to deal with them. You can PM me as to quantity if you'd like get it directly from us. He will be going into collection again this fall.

We will also have an excellent selection of sons available out of a highly functional and sound set of cows if you decide to go that way. Thanks!

Breed him to the govt mule daughters. You may have something there.
