A dark blue bull out of a solid black bull(PB simmy, no color in the pedigree) and a pretty bright red roan mama would probably throw what out of black simangus cows and char x cows. Cow are and have been solid colored a good many generations. Some have a white face.

I know he carries red, but how is the roan inherited? Because he is roan, but dark, what would you say he would be less likely to have roan calves from solid cows, or is the roan coming through regardless? His top end would be sold as show calves, thus color doesn't matter as much, but we are putting him on our commercial herd, thus the bottom end is sale barn bound so I would prefer they were more solid colored.

I think he would improve our quality tremendously and would really like to keep him, but I'm not too experienced with how roan is inherited and would appreciate input. I know some are likely to be roan, but is it probably going to be 1/2 or could I get away with lower % since he is sired by a black bull and is pretty dark himself? Thanks!

There is a seperate gene that makes them roan...since he carries the gene there is a possibility it would present itself. If the cows dont carry the roan gene, then only about a 25% chance the gene will be passed. And even in that 25% its no guarantee that the gene will express itself.

Roan is a co dominant trait, so wouldent the typical 1:4 ratio not work in this case?
