ok I was looking at making a ration using grand 4t fyer but using at the suggested rate of 20% the protein is very high for what most around me feed as a finishing ration . but looking at the actual show chow feeds they are high aswell . others around me say to use a 10 to 11 percent protein with a 4 to 5 % fat . confused on feeding any help would be great

To me it seems that PPL have a good chance of getting more confused when asking ration questions here on the Planet. There are many to look at through the search function. I suggest finding a somewhat local nutritionist in your area that is willing to think and help you out, not just sell his or her companies products. Now to answer your question somewhat vaguely, 12 to 15% protein depending what stage of growth and development that your calves are in and 4 to 5% fat.

thanks for the input . I myself think a 10% protein ration is to low to continue the growth of a calf as frame as frame and muscle . so I will stick to my plan of a 12 to 13 percent with around 4% fat . my steer is a fall born and weighs about 700

I thought Gran 4 Tfyer had a ration scenario that was around 13% protein and 3% fat.  We fed this product for awhile but seems expensive way to buy a bunch  of cottonseed hulls I wouldn't normally feed.

I stick to the feed ration without supplements, if the calf is on track, if holding I will cut the calories and add protein and fat to keep them fresh and maintain their condition. If I need finish I will add stabilized rice bran, if I still need them to gain but already have the finish I will add calf-manna, or other source of protein.
Most show feed ration have the balance of fat and protein the animal needs, only when I find we're behind or ahead of where we need to be, do we mess with it.

Here are my rations using Grand 4T Fyer. My steers have 3.0 and 3.4 ave daily gain on it.
Steers:
45.5% cracked corn
15% whole oats
10% steam rolled barley
4.5% cottonseed hulls
1.25% soybean oil
3.75% liquid molasses
20% Grand 4T Fyer

Heifers:
43% cracked corn
21% whole oats
10% dry beet pulp shreds
6% liquid molasses
20% Grand 4T Fyer

Many folks won't share their secret recipes, but I will because not many would share with me when I was trying to figure out a ration that works for us.
