Cool Bot

GMC body wiht a cummins and a allison and the ford nick nacks. my dad has a gmc 96 with 200,500 mils on it and its body is perfect(except for a few stone chips thank to a jerk with a lawmower) but lil stuff like supports and fuel pumps and lil  gose out. my dads old ford was rusted out in a min and doges dont compapre with there crappy front ends. and a ford A/C checy A/C suck now theres a truck

When you mean feeder calves in the room do you mean just calves (700 lbs or less) or fat steers (1250 lbs)? I have a cooler but looking to help out a buddy looking to do one and this might be the ticket using a coolbot.

I bought a cool bot controler off of ebay. They had it direct from the factory for 189.00. They reccomend a LG air conditioner since it has a crankcase heater on the compressor. Web site has charts for sizing the air conditioner you need.

They work great!  However.......... you need to keep a spare window unit for the day the one you have craps out on a 105 degree day.... trust me!!  It will get rreal hot for a calf that has been in 42 degree room (this is exactlly what happened to us) before you can run to get a new one!  Our electrician said that even a brand new unit willl only take constant cooling like that for a short while.

Also,  sometimes you can get slightly damaged 4 inch panels from a log home supply company or dealer.  These panels are used in the roofs of log homes.

What does your electric bill run in the summer months?

Our Feeder calves range from 300 pounds up to 600 by September.  We have also had yearling heifers in it.

Electric bill runs about $65.00 - $75.00 when using the A.C. (separate barn meter)


If you have properly insulated and prepared the room, your unit compressor will not fun a whole lot more than it normally would.  If the compressor is constantly running then you have inadequate insulation and sealing, or you need to turn the temp up.

That's not bad. Now all I have to do is get some funding from the bank of Dad  (lol)

I use that bank too!  (thumbsup)

Where can I find this at?

Our showbarn is 20 X 30. It is. pretty well insulated as it was an old farrowing barn.  I just need to get a good insulated sliding door put on it.  It already has a ventilation system on it. Does the room need to be completely sealed up or can you still run a vent. fan? I would like to keep the room as fresh as possible.

My problem is size of air conditioner,  on the Cool Bot site it only shows rooms at the largest size of 10 x 14.  If I purchase a large window unit and install a bot, will it be enough to cool a 20 x 30 room?  They are talking about using the bot to get down to 33 degrees,  we won't need to be that cool.  What temp are most people keeping their cool rooms at?

with a 20x30 room I would say portion part off for a cooler unless you plan on filling it with calves at the same time, otherwise your just trying to keep a large room cooled for nothing.

If you want to use an old farrowing room as a cooler I would basically double up, put in two 18,000 btu one at each end. Like Dyer said though, unless your filling it with calves, just section off a part of it. I think the general rule of thumb when building a cooler is 3x8 per calf. The room does need to be sealed for insulation reasons, but putting a vent fan in probably wouldn't hurt much. I would definitely put one in to keep it fresh. Kirk Stierwalt runs his cooler at 48. He says that's cold enough to grow hair and keep them from melting at shows.
