Has anyone ever fed Corn Gluten to weaned calves (not for show)?  I was wondering what the results were and what kind of protein percentage that it has in it.

We have fed the powered kind as a top dressing for steers we were trying to put fast weight on.  I have a neighbor that feeds a pelleted type to his cows to supplement during the winter, don't know the protein %, but he is very happy with it.

Several people around here are feeding it as a protien supp.  I believe they told me it runs around 17% protien.

I assume you are referring to corn gluten feed.  17% is too low, it is more like 24-25% protein.  Corn gluten feed (wet or dry) makes excellent feed for calves.  A good starting ration would 50% corn gluten feed with 50% corn silage.

are you talking gluten or wet distillers? 50 percent distillers would be a hot for starting calves.

Around here you can get gluten pellets or wet gluten. I fed the wet gluten one winter, delivered it in a semi trlr with a dump & I moved it with a bobcat. Looks like wet sawdust & it crusts over , cows love it.

Corn gluten (meal), corn gluten feed (CGF) & wet distillers are 3 totally different things/feeds.

Corn gluten meal is 41% protein.

CGF ranges from 17 - 26% protein.  Most gluten pellets would be CGF.

Around here we feed approx. 2/3 Soy Hulls & 1/3 CGF with vitamins/minerals/yeast & Monensin mixed in.  CGF is high in sulfur & can become toxic, that's why we limit the ration to 1/3.  FWIW, that is what I feed my show calves until right before the show.  My dad has finished steers feeding only hay, & a ration consisting of soy hulls, corn gluten feed & hominy.

we pick up gluten for a local beef feeder. He feeds out Holsteins. Not sure how it does for him.

Distillers grain & corn gluten feed are not the same thing, and both can be purchased wet or dry.  Distillers grain is around 30% protein.  What is really confusing is that there is a BIG difference between corn gluten feed & corn gluten.

I use 24% CP on a DM basis in my ration balancer for corn gluten feed.  The majority of dry CGF comes pelleted (average pellet quality; plenty of fines).  The benefits are that it is an economical protein source that is low in starch and high in fiber (less bloat, founder), and is high in phosphorus.  Things to watch with CGF are high sulfur content, which TJ already mentioned, it can be toxic and can cause sulfur induced polio (treatable with injectable Thiamin).  Also, it does have some palatability issues, so you do have to start cattle on them slowly.  As a nutritionist my thumb rule for feeding CGF is to limit it to 0.5% of body weight.  Example: 600# calf can be safely fed up to 3# of CGF per day.  My best results with CGF have been when it is mixed with corn or soyhulls or something else to dilute the sulfur.  Also, if you feed the higher levels of CGF, you won't need much phos in your ration, so pick a high calcium, low phos mineral, which will also save you a few bucks.

If you are asking about wet gluten, corn gluten meal, wet or dry distillers, these feeds are all different and have different benefits and challenges.

We use a Corn Gluten and Soy Hull pellet feed for all of our cows and calves during the winter when trying to stretch hay and for the calves while preconditioning. Works great for us, we also put feed grade lime on it to insure that the calcium levels arent messed up. The mix we have runs about 15% protein with the soy hull pellets.

We also feed 2/3 Pelleted CGF and 1/3 Pelleted SBH, I have been known to use it in creep feed.  Normaly we use a 1/3, CGF, 1/3 SBH, and a 1/3 corn screenings for a general feed

Actually the place where we get it (1/2 mile away), bags up the 2/3 SH & 1/3 CGF mix & labels it as "calf creep feed".  My dad buys it in bulk a lot cheaper & he feeds it free choice to his weanling steers.  I think they gained well over 3 lbs. per day on it last year.  Pretty much everything else is fed either soy bean hulls or nothing at all, unless he's finishing something.

I have the option of feeding CGF pellets plus whole corn or whole corn top dressed with soybean meal (48% CP). Anyone have an opinion which would be better?  Feeding brood cows. Thanks for your suggestions.

I think there would be no difference between those two diets.  Feeding the CGF + whole corn would be cheaper.

around here you can't buy gluten anymore. Just distillers grains, wet or dry, and syrup. Holstein's ration up to 65% of ration wet and beef cattle 50% wet distillers, any more than that you'll have problems. A friend was feeding 20 pounds of wet a day to brood cows and they did not breed back the following summer. Great feed, cheaper than corn, but don't over do it. Make sure you feed high cal mineral and adding thiamine is a good idea.
