I have been thinking of flushing one of my top shorthorn cows, but I am wondering what it costs to get it done. I also live in Canada, so I assume cost would be slightly different from the States. Any infromation on this would be great.

Costs can vary somewhat, and your total costs will vary with the number of embryos you get and if they are froze or implanted fresh. The ET center I use is at the higher end for costs, but they offer excellent service in regards to assisting in arranging shipment to other countries, retaining exportasble status on embryos, etc,  My flushes including freezing a flush of 8 grade 1 embryos usually runs at about $1000- 1100. I would highly recommend you ask your ET vet to wash your embryos so they will be exportable to many countries. Many ET vets do not do this without being asked to do it. The ET center I use washes all our embryos and they do not charge any extra for doing this. This is included in the cost of the flush.

It all depends on the place you get your ET work done. Every place has their own pricing system. mine normally runs about $40 to freeze each egg and about $ total to get her flushed and some put in fresh.

Thanks Grant, which ET vet do you use? I have for a while thought about getting my cow, Bell M Misty 57P, flushed. She was the one that started my herd and she is not getting any younger so to keep genetics on her I would hopefully like to flush her.

I use Davis-Rairdan Embryo Transplants from Crossfield, AB  for most of my flushing. It is a 600 mile trip out there but I continue to use them because of their international work.  They do on- farm flushing through the months of April, May and June. If you have some recips set up they will also put the embryos you collect, in at the same time. I have also used Optimum Genetics at Regina, and have good success with them as well. I think there are quite a few excellent choices. I have stayed with Davis-Rairdan mainly because I export so many embryos and they seem to do so much international work that we can oftentimes make up joint shipments. Right now I am putting a shipment together for Britain and have gathered about 50-60 embryos that have sold over there. I have 26 of my own and okotoks has some along with several from other breeds. I am hoping we can find a few more to put in the tank so that the costs will be minimal on a per embryo basis.

I see that your Misty 57P cow is a descendant of HC Mac's Missie 78L, that your family purchased from us as a bred heifer. I remember her very well, and she was a thick even roan female with some outcross genetics in her background.

Okay. My grandpa has two full sisters from Misty 57P as well in the herd. The bred heifer I sold in the 2012 CWA sale would be a grand daughter to her sold to Haydocks, and in the 2011 CWA sale her daughter sold to Peckovers. Thank you again for the information, I will have to talk it over with my dad.
