If you collect  under a 1000 units - something like $1.85/  . Blood tests and $6/day to stay at the stud. You definately want to use a reputable stud, everyone asks who collected. Just remember to make sure he freezes before  you advertise? GOOD LUCK AND BE SURE TO POST A PIC

ok i will post a picture when we get one on a good camera (all i got is cellphone videos). we are thinking about camp cooley since it isnt very far from where i live (college station texas). and we want to collect before we jump the gun like you said. the bull himself is a Lead On x Wyoming wind, he is a virgin right now  but will be old enough to breed our cows in January. then we want to take him and get him collected and promote him bigtime

Definately photo before stud. I would let him breed a couple too. Call the stud see what they reccommend.

i think thats what we will do. maby get some progeny on the ground first (even though they will all be americans since all our cows are) then hit up camp cooley after we see the offspring

ya that would prob be a good thing to do...  Might not hurt to collect the bull first go around for your own use...  if that is he is good enough.

I don't know what its like around your place, but I can get Interglobe to come down and collect everything on the place for 100 bucks..  much cheaper than driving up to their place to do it.  I was also just speaking with another collection firm...  and he comes down, collects ecerything, and freezes everything on teh spot, and puts it direct into my tank...

I think sue's recommendation of letting him breed a couple first is an excellent idea, just to get him "cleaned out" but if this bull is what you beleive to be "big-time" i would also recommend getting him collected before putting him out with a group of cows.  If he gets injured or breaks his tool and you don't have semen in the tank for insurance, you are going to be sick.

We have two bulls going to stud in the next couple weeks. One to Genex Hawkeye West at Billings and the other to Alta Genetics, Balzac, AB. While there is some variation in prices between studs, I would be very selective in which one you chose, and don't just use the cost per straw to decide that. There are certain studs that I would never send a bull I owned to even if they offered to collect him at no cost.
Hawkeye West charges $2/straw for 500 doses or less and 1.65/ straw for over 500 straws. Board is $6/ day. Health tests are extra and usually run $600-700 if you are collecting CCS qualified semen ( ie: semen that can be exported to several other countries) If you are collecting semen for use in your own country and are not interested in any exportable semen, the vet costs are minimal.

Alta Genetics is $2.25/ straw and $12/ day board. They are an excellent stud and I do not even consider the additional costs as being significant and they look after your bull and he will probably come back in excellent condition. I have seen bulls coming out of some other studs that have been in very poor condition.

Talk with the different studs and also talk to people who have used each stud as well. I would agree that you should get any promotional pictures taken before the bull goes to stud. Also make sure the stud only processes the highest quality semen possible. I would rather have a collection of 25 good straws than a collection of 100 mediocre quality straws. There is nothing more frustrating than getting some phone calls from people who tell you they had very poor conception from the semen you sold them.

well we are going to get pictures and good videos of him during my christmas break. (steerplanet will be the first folks to see them). and turn him loose on our ranch cows (the original reason he was bought lol was to make our show operation better). but just for 30 days so he stays in good shape. then we are going to send him to camp cooley and get roughly 1000 straws on him and see how that goes. and if he makes a hit we will get him collected again. . . so as yall can tell we have decided to go camp cooley. would you consider that reputible enough?. . . i really do appreciate all of the help from all of you alot!

Here's a link to a Tx collection facility that we have used & gotten along great with in Canton ,Tx. There's a guy there that has forgotten more about collecting bulls than I'll ever know. Bob Woodard I believe is his name.
