Do any of you have a prospect steer show at your county fair? Our fair is mid September so many of the calves would be recently weaned. I was just wondering if a prospect show is common in other parts of the country.

We have prospect steer and heifer shows in Southeast Minnesota, as well as state fair.

most of the prospect shows in Southern ohio in August - September are at county fairs.

From may till September you can hit a county fair or FFA show every weekend and you can show prospects,  market ready or heifers, or even all three! Keeps us busy. We call most of them "blow and go" shows since most are not overnight.  Great state to live in: )

Our county fair has what they call "Baby Beef".  it is a male calf born that year.  Also there is a "Bucket Calf" class it can be either sex but has to have been raise only from a bucket or bottle. It give the you a chance to get next year calves a early start on breaking them.

In Oklahoma we have two state market steer shows a year - the Oklahoma Youth Expo in March and the Tulsa State Fair in October.  Our county has two shows as well - a spring stock show in March (that's the one w/ the premium sale) and a fair in August.  In the spring the Tulsa age steers can show at the county as prospects, in the fall (county fair) the OYE steers are prospects.  Most people in our county feed for the spring shows because of the county premium sale, so in the spring the market show is big (comparitively so anyway) and the prospect show is small, in the fall the market show is smaller and the prospects bigger (in numbers). We do have a bottle/bucket calf class at the fair but it's just for fun, not even show calf prospects, just dairy calves and the occasional orphan.
