Cows in heat??

I have some cows I would like to bring in heat that had calves in January, we would like to AI them...... Is there anything that we could do/give them to for sure bring them heat????? Before we have had cows not come in heat when we needed to AI them.. Thanks guys! I want to be sure they get bred.! ???

Give them a shot of GnRH such as Cystorelin or OvaCyst start observing for heat 6 days later. On day seven give them a shot of PG such as Lutalyse or Estrumate then observe for heat the next 6 days.  Ai 12 hours after standing heat is observed.

Or you could use the same protocol but use a CIDR for seven days.  GnRH and put CIDR in, then pull CIDR and give PG on day seven.

We have gotten along very well with CIDRs in the past now this year we are trying the old school of just lute and try to observe heat. Then try again in 10 days if no heat is detected. We had good luck with that before CIDRs came around.

First thing is to make sure they are on good feed and mineral program.  I have the best luck on green grass when they are on the gain in body condition, but green grass isn't always an option.  I also like to have at least one heat cycle before trying to synch them for AI.  Seems that sometimes the first heat after calving, even if it has been 60 days or more isn't always a real fertile heat.

We have had real luck with the CIDR protocol that was mentioned.  

ok I will try that then! 8) Our cows are on a decent quality hay mixed with minerals,corn, some oats,ect.

try to not switch the ration around ... try to keep the environment as stable as possible

Are you in an area with some pretty tough weather?

We are skipping the CIDRs this year.  I was talking to one of our vets about what appears to be a skipped cycle if they don't stick and I have had too much of it the past few years to want to try it again. They get so late it's not worth it to me.  I'm sure I will synch some but like obie will use the good old fashioned routine. 

Well we live in Ohio so the weather is anywhere between30 and 50 degrees lately... we've had a little bit of snow and rain but the cows are all indoors
